I also wanted to know where the ignition switch is located, someone told me that I had to lower my steering column.

GENERAL MOTORS REAR WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES

<>

All General Motors (GM) vehicles built prior to 1995 and Dodge Dakotas with a 2.5 liter engine built prior to 1996 do not have an electrical Neutral Safety switch. They have a mechanical neutral safety switch in the ignition cylinder. A mechanical neutral safety switch operates as follows:

a) The vehicle will start with the key no matter what the position of the shifter.

b) The key can only be removed from the ignition switch when the shifter is the in Park position.

On all rear wheeled passenger cars built since 1995 and all trucks built since 1996, General Motors has since corrected this potential problem by installing electronic neutral safety switches. Applying +12 volts into the Starter wire on any of these types of vehicles will engage the vehicle’s starter, regardless of the shifter’s position. With the shifter in Park or Neutral this is fine — the vehicle will just start up. If the shifter is in any other position, the vehicles will lurch forward or backward if power is applied to the starter motor — such as by a remote starter. Thus is is absolutely essential to remove the key from this vehicle when leaving the vehicle.
