I just graduated from a certain mobile electronic school, and we were always told not to add remote starters on manual cars. I wanted to know from people who are out in the field, is this really true? and if so why?

Maybe they should have worded the warning a bit differently. You should NOT install an automatic remote starter on a manual transmission vehicle. There are manual safe remtoe starter's that will not allow you to start the vehicle without going through a sequence prior to exiting the vehicle to ensure that it is in nuetral. Otherwise, I have done it to many vehicles and none have returned to tell me that it failed and started in gear.

Not a good idea to put a remote start designed for automatic in a stick. I have heard many stories of cars taking off down the street, driving into other cars, or lightpulls. I have done it, I hooked the parking brake up as a hood pin. so it will only start with the parking brake on. if the car is in gear with the brake on it will move aheand a couple of feet before dying so even this is not the best way. (I used the hood pin because the ignition has to be on for the parking brake to show polarity otherwise I would have used the safety ground.)

I believe the school is suggesting that any remote starter install in a manual transmission automobile is unsafe because you are bypassing a safety feature in the car (i.e. clutch safety switch.)
In fact many install shops will not do manual transmission automobiles because of the liability.
The dangers of such have been already been mentioned above. However there are always advances in automobile technology and in remote starters . In addition to the use of the hood pin and ebarke there is also a neutral sensing wire in many new cars. This wire can be used to assure the car is in neutral. So between the hood pin (car cannot be remotely started with the hood up) and the ebrake and the neutral sensing wire they can be quite safe. Also with a few clicks of the remote the user can put the car in a service mode before bringing it to a garage for repairs.Tell your teachers they need to keep up with things. lol..

brunetmj, what cars do you know have neutral sensing wires in them? I know about Subarus (I have a WRX), I'm just wondering what other manufacturers have them.

I was basing this fact on several articles i had been reading about trends in automobile eletronics.They did not give a list of currently available models. I was aware of subaru having the wire though but i dont know what other models have them.

The Mazda's have the nuetral sensing wire as well.
