Subject: Remote Start 03 Grand Am

I am thinking about installing a Valet 554R remote start keyless system.  I have always prior to this GA installed all my own equipment.  After I got the car in Aug I went to the local install shop to pick up a Pioneer AVHP-6500DVD, they told me that I should not install it myself, for risk ok blowing the air bags.... since I dont have a few grand laying around to re-pack the bags, I let them install it.........do I run the same risk when putting in a remote start? Is this just a mith? or can I get around this problem by simply pulling the air bag fuse till install is done, and how do I know everything is ok and I can put the fuse back in?

Any information would be helpfull always willing to learn

Thanxs

Alan

chances are they were just warning you of RDS problems.  i havent seen any of heard of many airbags blowing.  when i do an RDS i unhook the neg battery terminal and do the whole install with the RDS radio relocation kit.  i run the cables to the trunk and usually mount the factory radio behind the trunk liner on the passenger side.  once the radio is back there i back strap it in place and cover the edges that touch the body with dynomat or a similar item.  then i plug the relocarion harness in and re connect the battery, then turn on the ignition and set the aftermarket radio clock and stations.

you should be able to to a remote start with out any problems you wouldnt find in any other car.  RDS should effect the ignition system.  however, i know from a newer monte carlo i did that the parking lights/head light hookup can be a little ackward.  when i finished the monte they flashed in a random pattern and the head lights would flash when it got the signal then turn off  on crank, then come on for 5sec and turn off and the parking lights would stay on.  beats me.  the install was an avital 4200.  it worked fine, just not typical.

Thank  you sroth140

Ok I am a little more confident about attempting this remote start now that I know there is little chance of blowing the bags.  forgive my ignorance but what is an RDS (Radio Data System)?

I have been looking at a Crimestopper PLDATA-II to bypass the Passlock II system....from what I can pick up this is the best system to use since you only need to tap one wire at the OBD...and I am assuming the 554R will connect to the PLDATA module are these 2 systems compatable? This is the PLDATA module I am looking at https://www.electricboutique.com/index.asp?U=DASpldata does this mean I leave, the yellow, and the black wire comming from the key cylinder alone?  I have read about GM anti-theft adapters,https://www.electricboutique.com/index.asp?U=DASrsgmataii do these interface with the factory keyless system and make it easier to install and aftermarket security system?

its road data system, its class 2 wiring.  the radio and car "talk" to each other, it just makes the stock radio more a part of the car, indicated by the gold RDS letters stamped on the radio face.

id just buy a DEI 555L bypass.  easy to wire and program.  follow the wiring info and start the car with the key, let it run for a few seconds and the 555L learns the proper R code.  The 03 GA has a second ignition and second accy wire, Lock is straight negative trigger. Unlock is negative trigger thru a 1.5K (1500) ohm resistor. MUST use relays. MUST close doors to lock with a single pulse.  you can also use DEI 456A interface module.  most of the wires besides the ignition harness can be found at the BCM between the blower motor and the passenger side kick panel.

hi you can also pull the instrument cluster to get ign wires makes life a little easier as the key is in dash i recommend the pl 2003 to bypass passlock as this does not require cutting the passlock wires ive had a few 555l fail or cause vehicle to lock up.

thanxs ck auto

you are talking about pulling the tach and mph gauges out....seems kinda complex, is there any type of schematic telling me how to get this stuff apart? I know how to pull the radio thats easy, but the insturment cluster seems kinda hard

when I install the 1.5ohm resistor, I put it between the #30 post on the resistor and the white wire located at the drivers kick, is this correct?

I am looking at diagrams to wire resistors, and it shows that for a 03 Grand Am GT1 you need to wire a resistor to make the head lights flash.  it is saying that the wire comming from the alarms control unit needs to be inverted, or polarity amplified, and then connected to the #86 post of the resistor, is this the vehicle parking light wire that needs to be inverted or amplified? and how do I invert or amplify this wire?

hi the instrument cluster is easy to get out screws on top of guages and 2 behind trim panel on bottom.if you pull radio do not unplug  it or you'll have problems.

yes that will work for your resistor.

why do you want headlights to flash unstead of park lights?

Hi i done an avital 4100 on an 02 and a avital 4300 on an 04 grand am. The 04 was alil tough from the get go, simply becuz it was the 1st time that i done an install on a car like it, but now that i finished that and it works. The 02 was alil more easier. He is right about the speedometer piece, when you remove all of the 7mm screws, you'll have this big empty cavity that will make getting to all of your wires alil easier. Except the one thing i found, is you still want to remove the radio, it'll make it alil easier to get to the wires when you strip them back. You might be able to reach them from inside the dash cavity, but my fat fingers couldnt LOL. As far as everything else, once you get that dash piece off, you can also tap into the parking lights even easier. Also i'd order the PLXR from bypasskits.com, that will be alot easier to use then the 555L, all you have to do with that is just tap into the yellow passlock wire and the green keysense wire. Doesnt require cutting the yellow wire in half. Also pretty easy to program.

Kirk

sounds easy enough thanxs, Is it possible to make both the parking lights and the head lights flash? I am looking for a one of a kind effect somthing special !!!!! I was looking at a web site, which now requires authorization to access, but they were showing that you could wire your lights to flash but you needed to invert or palarity amplify the wire comming from the alarm system.....any ideas how to make this happen

thanxs godsegoizhuge

I think I am going to use the PLXR kit, but what about the GMDL-BP kit it sais "GM Databus Passlock 2 & Passkey 3+ & Doorlock & Alarm Interface" the door lock and alarm interface what does this do? does this make it easier when hooking up the doors, like I dont need relays and resistors? and does it interface with the factory alarm easier?

Donation is comming soon just got the alarm today, so kinda broke, sometime early next week

thanxs alot everyone I am starting to pick up the information I need to do this right

Pretty simple car..Anytime your messing with wiring it's always possible to blow the airbags especially if you don't know what your doing. Luckily this car is a little better because there is no reason to go anywhere near the steering column harness where the air bag wires would normally come down. I wouldn't recommend removing the gauge cluster for this car there really is no reason. Pull the radio to tap your ignition 2 (d. green) and your passlock wires (yellow, black, and green keysense) and everything else you can pickup in the harness in the drivers kick going into the firewall. I've pulled the radio on every one of these cars I've done and never had one lock up on me..Just plug it back in when I'm done and go. If your scared there is plenty of slack on the factory harness to keep the radio plugged in and off to the side out of the way just make sure to put a rag or something between the radio and the dash so it doesn't scratch it all up. Here's my info on the car:

https://installz.com/wiringdiagrams/2003pontiacgrandam.gif

That info is the same for '04 as well. Good luck,

Mike

Mike you said with the 03 I would be staying away from the wires that operate the airbags.  Is there any info on what these wires are colors and such so that I make sure I leave them alone?

The YELLOW wires will be marked as such and they are either in looming or they will have thick insulation ( like plug wires in the engine ).

Ok I picked up a meter today, Mike you said test the wires properly? how do I go about doing this I know the black goes to ground and red goes to the wire I am testing but what setting do I put it on and how do I know what I am looking for?

O YEA I found the airbag wire I am staying far away from it!!!!!!

Ok well let's see a bit much but I will go through a bunch of them real quick..Your basic settings will be dc voltage, and continuity (resistance). And yes for all this testing your black lead of the meter should be on a good ground and the red lead to the wire.

Constant - Red - Thick Wire - Set on DC voltage should show around 12 volts and closer to 14 with the car started.

Ignition 1 & 2 - Pink & Dark Green Thick Wires - Set on DC voltage should have voltage when you turn the key to the ignition position, should keep it's voltage while the car is cranking (may drop a FEW volts while cranking) and then keep voltage on it while the car is running.

Accessory - Orange Thick Wire - Set on DC voltage should have voltage when the ignition is on, then when you start the car the voltage goes away while the car cranks, then will come back once the car is running.

Starter - Yellow Thick Wire - Set on DC voltage will get about 12 volts on it WHILE the car is cranking. No voltage with just the ignition on and no voltage after the car is started and running as long as you don't hold the key in the start position thus grinding the starter..

Park Lights - Brown Wire - Set on DC voltage will show no voltage until you turn on the parking lights at which time it will show 12 volts.

Horn - Black Wire - Set on DC voltage it will sit at 12 volts all the time until you push the horn. When you push the horn, the 12 volts will go away and won't come back until you let go of the horn. Technically once you press the horn this wire will get a ground on it but that can be hard to pickup on your meter unless you hold the horn down for a while.

Brake - Blue or White Wire - Set on DC voltage this wire will have no voltage on it until you push the brake at which time it will get 12 volts and will remain at 12 volts until you let go of the brake.

Trunk Release - Black / White - Set on continuity or resistance this wire will show little resistance to ground while you push the trunk release button. That resistance should remain until you let go of the button.

Door Triggers - GREEN/ Black & Light Blue - Set on continuity or resistance this wire will show little resistance to ground while the doors are open. GREEN/ Black is the driver door and the Blue wire is the passenger door or the other 3 doors on a 4 door model.

Door Locks - White wire - This is a single wire door lock meaning you need to add a resistor to it. The wire should show a ground when you hit the lock switch, and possibly a few volts when you hit the unlock switch not real sure to be honest haven't tested one in a while.

That should pretty much cover it. That info combined with the wiring info already given should be pretty much spot on for you. Find the wire in the location specified, and then test it to see if it tests the way it should. Very easy car to work with all the wires you need are pretty obvious and easy to get too..The only ones you may not get on the first try would be the horn and the parking light wire because there are usually a lot of blacks and browns running in that harness. (Depending where you plan to find them at.) Here's my info again if you need it:

https://installz.com/wiringdiagrams/2003pontiacgrandam.gif

Good luck,

Mike

I am finding some conflicting diagrams on how to wire the door locks. One diagram shows that both the (-) lock and (-) unlock need to use a relay, however I have been looking at another that only shows that the (-) unlock needs a relay with the 1.5 resistor. Is this true that I am just run the (-) lock wire from the RStart to the door lock wire and only worry about a relay and resistor on the (-) unlock?

Thanxs Alan

I don't remember what unit you said you are using but here's the basics. If the unit your using has selectable door locks, meaning you can set it for either positive OR negative, then you shouldn't need any relays. Just set it for negative, tie the lock directly to the white wire, put the resistor inline on the unlock wire, and tie that in as well. If the unit your using has dual outputs both + and - on both the lock and unlock wires, meaning you can't set it for one or the other, you will need to add relays. Hope that helps,

Mike

Yes thanxs mike its a Valet 554R and from looking at the manual it shows <(-) Unlock (+) Lock Output> and <(-) Lock (+) Unlock Output> so from what I am getting from this is that is has dual outputs, thus I would need to use a relay for lock and unlock, and on the unlock side I would put the resistor.

I am reading a wireing diagram and it is saying that for the door trigger on an 03 GA GT1 you need to diod isolate the passenger and other 2 doors from the drivers door trigger. here is what I am confused about the Valet 554R has 2 wires for the door trigger one that reads <to (+) door switch wire> and one that reads <to (-) door switch wire>.  The wireing diagram is only showing that I have one wire in the car for the door trigger, the lt blue/black in the driver kick and the lt blue in the passanger kick............so do I simply take the <to (-) door switch wire> from the Valet 554R split the lead and send one to the lt blue/black wire for the driver, and send the other to the lt blue for the passanger door with the diod in-line white band facing the lt blue wire?

I guess simply what I am asking is do I only need to use one of the wires comming from the Valet 554R either the (-) or the (+) and just let the other wire alone?

I went to Radio Shack to pick up some diodes and I was a little lost as to what to get.  I know I need a 1Amp diod but what volt rating do I need? I got a 200V and what is the difference between a Silicon Diod, and a Rectifier Diod? which one do I need?

Thanxs

Alan

umm, dei part number 451m is what you need.  two relays in one.  if you need negative outputs, tie the purple wire to a ground signal as opposed to 12v for 5 wire door locks.  that lets you have negaitve lock out puts from both blue and green wires.  put the resistor in series with which ever wire (output) then tie that into the other lock/unlock wire.

PONTIAC, GRAND AM, 2003, Power Lock

Lock is straight negative trigger. Unlock is negative trigger thru a 1.5K (1500) ohm resistor. MUST use relays. MUST close doors to lock with a single pulse.

The BCM (Body Control Module) is between the blower motor and the passenger side kick panel.

The door triggers are as follows,  lt.GREEN/ black drivers door    lt blue all others. these wires are found on the passengers side just above the kickpanel at the body control module. you can slide the bcm out from its bracket to get at the wires easily.  to diode isolate you take 2 diodes (1n4005 I believe it is a rectifier diode)  twist the ends without the stripes together and connect to the - door trigger on your remote starter/ alarm.   The + input is for installation flexibility with various different vehicles.    You can also get your door locks , parklights and trunk relese  as well as park brake at the bcm.     Good luck with that, its a fairly basic vehicle once youve done a couple

Craig is the BCM a black plastic box with three connectors, or is it a metal box that takes 2 screws to drop down?

Nevermind, I got brave and pulled that metal box down to find out it was the XM radio unit

I got a PLDATA module from Crime Stopper, and I am unsure on how to install it. I know the purple wire goes to pin 2 on the OBDII but there is a brown wire that needs to be "Connected to (-) ground output when running wire of remote start system" does anyone know which wire on the remote start unit, this wire on the PLDATA plugs into?

there will be a  status or ground when running wire on your remote starter. this will be the wire. however I have never even heard of the model starter you are using. but I can say that that pldata bypass is a great one to use and works well. but check the install guide that came with the starter for that ground when running or send me the install guide and I should be able to help you out

Craig,

Here is the link for the RS https://www.caraudio-caralarms.com/554T.html hope you can tell me what wire to send to the brown wire on the PLDATA

When the engin imobalizer is stoping the car from starting, does it sit there and crank, or does it simply just sit there......here is what is happening when I go to RS.......car turns on as if key was in acc position.....then turns back off.....and unlocks doors....but does not crank is this because of the engin imobalizer?

door locks seem to work great !!!!! just can get the stupod thing started

ok I am having some problems. When I remote start the car turns on as if the key were in the acc position then turns off and unlocks the doors.  I have about 2 volts comming from the tach, all wires on the key cylinder are correct, The third ignition wire is running to the PLDATA, I have grounded out the neutral switch.......I have no clue what to do now. any ideas?

Craig thank you sooooo much would never be this far if it was not for you!!!!!!

I just finished installing a RS its a Valet 554R on an 03 Grand Am GT1 and car starts great, but after I put in the key and hit the break pedal, and hit the defroster button it sets off the aftermarket alarm. It also does it if I push the button when driving down the road as well.  Does anyone know why this is???? do I need to isolate somthing.  Does anyone have any ideas???

Hey Alan, before you get into the car, do you unlock with the remote to disarm the alarm system ? Sounds wierd that you can get into the car and everything, and the car is still armed ??

I am not an expert but to me sounds like the remote start isn't disabling the alarm? Or better yet, it is disabling it but when the RS shuts down instead of just re-enabling it, getting some feedback in there.  Just an idea I have from reading other posts and such.

Jeff I am clicking the unlock button on the 554R remote. I did not connect the status wire from the RS to the  drivers door trigger since I do not believe it has RDS. But its not the factory alarm thats triggering its the aftermarket alarm. ass soon as I turn back off the defroster the siren stops.....I dont know!!!!

Jeff

Not sure when it sets off the siren I dont know that it is actually setting off the alarm since the brain is not paging the remote and the led's do not indicate that it was triggered by anything I am guessing that a wire got mixed up while hooking up the system.........I think this is somthing that I am just going to need to investigate to fix it......does anyone know how to wire up the trunk release relay? like which wire goes to which pin?.....also if and when I get this defroster problem fixed does anyone know how to hook up the defroster output from the 554R. DEI shows that it has a designated output but there is nothing in the manual to tell how to do this????

Alan
