yes there is a way but it is highly illegal for a reason, heres why, a few years ago i installed a remote starter in a friends manaual transmission S-10 truck, at one point he needed to jump start his truck but did not disable the system, he did not have keys in, upon completing jumper cable connections, the truck started while in gear, it lunged forward taking out a pay phone, word to the wiser, dont do it

There are a lot of units out there that has manual transmission remote start capability.  These systems are designed for manual transmission, automatic, turbo, or diesel engines.  Some systems are better than others.  Some have better safety features that even senses the car if in gear or not while others only have the emergency break sensor.

is it really highly illegal?  I have a 2003 mustang gt and 2003 ford focus SE plus my girlfriends 2000 mitsubishi mirage DE all 3 are 5spd and all 3 have Remote starts.  How do they catch you and what is the fine/ticket I am looking at?

i just installed a commando 5005 system with remote start on my 5sp, but i took precautions to make it safe....i used a home security window magnet (normally open) and placed the magnet on my shift cable and the sensor was mounted nearby so that the switch is open only when the car is in neutral, the sensor is wired to my clutch pedal switch so that my clutch is 'down' when the car is neutral

Crudeau,

I believe that they are refering to retro fitting a regular remote start made for a automatic trans mission to work in a manual trans car.

I don't know that its illegal however like everyone above has said it is risky.

Atleaset with the models that are made for a manual trans they have some preventive steps... if you do some searching on this board about manual transmissions .. you will find out...

I have 2 viper 550ESP and a Viper 790CX (or vx one of them).    All I had to do was wire a relay up to the clutch swich and the negative output of the remote start.    I tested it in gear and after 3 attempts at starting it moves the car about 1.5' with the parking brake on.  I never leave the car in gear and don't park on hills so I haven't had an issue yet.  Some day someone will invent a Netural saftey switch for manuals.  Till then, I am rebel with a remote start! posted_image

I installed a DirectStart423 designed for manual. Its design is to put the vehicle in neutral, press the parking brake. activate the remote while the vehicle is running, remove the key, exit the vehicle and then kill the vehicle with the remote button.if the door is reopened it will not start.

Sounds like some steps I would forget.  Someone should invent some kind of unversal ring with some switches in it.  Fits around the shifter and if not in neutral it grounds out.  This could be used as a neutral saftey switch.
