I purchased a crime stopper alarm, with remote start, for my wifes 2001 subaru outback sedan (I have the wiring diagram).  Talking with friends (mercedes mechanics) they lean towards the use of t-taps for connections.  I was reading in the forum about sodering wires and was curious if any one can give me the correct way to splice and soder wires for a beginner because that seems to be the best route.  I mean simple 1, 2, 3, instructions to make a nice finish.

Use solder and electrical tape for all connections. You will find this to be the most effective way to make lasting connections. Also, ( not to sound arrogant but ) not all mechanics make good electrical installers.

  • Strip the wire and reveal the copper wiring
  • strip back the piece that you want to attach to the wire about 3/4" - 1"
  • take and wrap the wire around the target wire and make sure that you twist the end so that you do not have any frayed wires that can get soldered and poke through the tape when you wrap it
  • make sure that the soldering iron is hot and place on the connection
  • after about 10 - 15 seconds, take the solder and press against the connection and it will melt into the wires
  • take some electrical tape and wrap well ( about 3 wraps around the connections )

I think this is a funny one to answer.  I used to be an installer for the GOOD GUYS.  They swore by using Molex connectors for everything.  One exception was when doing alarms or remote starts.  It is the strongest and logest lasting connection.  Also if anyone looks at your installation in the future they will know it was done professionally.  Another bonus is that if a thief ever did break in and try to disarm your alarm it would not be as easy to pull the wires apart as a crimped on connector.  If you have not soldered before follow Jeffs instructions and be sure that when you solder you heat the wire and let the solder absorb into the wire.  If you heat the solder and melt it onto the wire it will create a cold solder joint.  If you need more help PM me.
