If you are addind a remote start car alarm to any Ford with PATS I find it easier to remove all the transponder chips from all the keys to that vehicle. Can be done easily with a razor knife and a flathead eyeglass screwdriver. Be careful when prying open the little black plastic square cover atop the key as it may fly away and get lost. Once you have removed the cover, take a pick and carefully remove the white insert. You will notice a clear glass tube with copper windings inside the white plastic protective housing. Do not remove glass tube from the plastic. Once you have removed all the "chips" remove the bottom of th steering column (usually 3 phillips head screws, it is not neccessary to remove the tilt lever. Once the bottom of the steering column is lowered you will notice a black wire with a pink stripe. fasten one of the chips to that wire as high up as possible with a small zip tie. now try to start the vehicle with your chipless key. Should start and stay running,if so simply replace steering column and finish your install, if it doesn't start you simply need to slightly reposition the "chip" until it does. This will always work. Upside, you save $20 or $30 and countless hours of programming nightmares. Downside, you permanently defeat the PATS in your car,"but" WHO CARES? The theif doesn't now that. Plus your installing your own starter kill any way and if you need to get a replacement key it will cost you $3 at your local hardware store. Just to add to what Don said here is another downside of this method. You run the risk of the chip moving while you drive after you have installed the chip. If the chip moves the nect time you start the vehicle at the grocery store or at the mall, you won't be able to unless you reposition the chip..... just make sure that you install the chip so that it will not move....ever. Oh... 1 more thing is if you end up using another chipped key, you may run into problems with a dual PATS signal going to the anti theft system that will screw up the PATS system and will wreck havoc on the ignition system.
