I'm installing a remote starter unit into a '97 Ranger w/ manual transmission. I've read about people installing a magnetic switch on the shifter to use it as a neutral safety switch, since the Ranger doesn't have one (correct me if someone knows differently).

Where would you mount the magnent to do this. The shifter is mounted to the floor and is surrounded by a boot, so it wouldn't be the easiest thing to get underneath.

Any ideas/recomendations would be greatly appreciated.

use a mercury switch and sip ties it to the shifter, just under the boot.

ok, sounds good.

where's a good place to get one? does it matter what kind of mercury switch, or might a magnetic one work as well?

so i got a no (normally open) magnetic switch (from radio shack).

did you mount it to the lever, or will it be evident once i remove the boot?

i'd like to only have to use one of these switches since they're 6 bucks a pop.

DUDE!!! are you usung a system made to work with a manual trans vehicle? It doesn't sound like it. If you just get  the right system you don't have to jerry rig anything, you simply connect to the e-brake, clutch bypass swithc, and door pins and follow the proper exit procedure.
