Hi I am looking to get an alarm, and I'll be installing myself, I've wired all kinds of stuff, MSD ignition, relays, stereo. With the instructions I don't think it will be a problem The criteria tho is that it needs to be a 2 way which means it will page me if the alarm is triggered. Like a Compustar system. I was about to buy the compustar on ebay but I read here now I have mixed feelings. I thought SS and long range is good to have, but I'm kind of rough with my remotes.. so I don't want to have unreliable remotes. Looked into the Clifford RSX as well. AutoPage?? is another one I see. This is an older car with nothing fancy no keyless entry no power locks so I'll need to rig up actuators (not a problem for me) The thing though is I don't need or won't be messing with remote start because I simply don't like it.. and I park in gear anyway.. But i might explore later after I get the basic functions working. Please recommend one of these transponder type to me. Price $100-$250. I need to make a decision soon.

I am a Compustar fan myself. I have installed a few of these and have had great success with them as far as reliability and durability. If your going to be rough with the remote's, it won't matter what comapny you deal with, they are all going to be the same as far as shock resistance.

Ok guys is the clifford 3.5 and viper 791 the SAME THING?
The LCDs seem to be the same, and the clifford seem to be owned by DEI now

i have the clifford matrix rs 3.5 and i love it. i upgraded from the rs2 that i loved so much. i havent had any problems at all and im using tons of features. i have the DEI trunk pop, added actuators, 5th channel garage door opener, battery back up, timer realy and peizo siren, 4th channel rear defogger, the good clear plastic DEI shock sensor, prox. sensor, and a merc switch on the hood and trunk. all of it works perfect, even the range and remote :D

I am kind of torn between the DEI product and Compustar right now I mean I want to walk inside the mall and know still get status of my car. Sometimes you need to park a little far. Been to walmart on a sunday afternoon? Some real life examples of the DEI's range would give me a better idea.

I see. I don't plan to hookup remote start at all. But I want to keep track of status in case someone breaks into it. Sometimes if I park at a school or theatre, it would be nice to get the status of the car at an extended range. That is where I think I would want the compustar

What about the ease of installation. I heard the DEI 791XV / RSX 3.5 install is simple, brain is small etc But No one ever said to me that it's easy to install the compustar.. . and the brain is bigger

The Compustar CPU is larger than that of the DEI because of all the internal relays, where the DEI has external relays instead. The Compustar installation is quite involved and does require background experience with electrical connections as well as knowing how to solder and hide wires properly inorder for the alarm system to be stealth. This is true for ANY alarm system installed by anyone though.

I can solder splice and tap that is no problem. Is it true that I need a "programmer" to program one of the compustar? Or is that urban legend.
