I recently had a Python 881XP installed on my 2003 F-150 and I love it. I'd like to install a sensor or trigger for the tailgate to detect if someone tries to open the tailgate. Would a normally open magnetic switch connected to a (-) trigger be the way to go or is there a better method?

Thanks.

There are several different things that you could do, but none of which I'm a fan of.  Your suggestion of the magnetic switch may be one of the best methods.  In addition, you could use a pin switch, but that would cause you to drill a hole in the body of the truck and it would be exposed to the weather.  I don't care for pin switches because they rust over time.

Do you have a cover on your truck?

Yes, I have a soft cover on my truck. I'd like to add a switch for that and diode isolate it from the tailgate switch, too.

why not just look at a proximity sensor?

if its jammed force it - if it breaks in the process it needed to be fixed anyway

Would one proximity sensor be enough to provide coverage for a pickup?

i use the contact switches on tail gates all the time and they work great...just take time to run the wires so that they wont get pinched....

Thanks draasch. Do you have a particular method or location that you run the wires or is it just keep them away from hot or moving objects?

just as you stated above....the switch will go on the frame and the magnet will go on the tailgate...

you may have to remove your taillight and drill a small hole to run the wires through....loom the wires to hide them and your on your way.....find a good place for the ground and the other wire will go to the alarm....
