I was wondering where to attach the ground wire to?
right now I just attached it to the bolt on the fuse box in the cabin.

System works fine but I wonder if I run a wire from the battery negative straight into the alarm, would I get better range etc?

if the alarm is working properly, your current ground is probably ok.  I allways ground it near the alarm brain under the dash or in the kick.  Running a wire from the battery will do nothing but  take time.
