Hello,

i tried a search to no avail.

i have an old audiovox alarm in one of the cars. i think it is a TPS550, if that sounds right.

anyhow, the parking light flashing circuit is dead (no output). so i tried using a SPDT relay and 552 turn signal flasher, as shown in the diagrams here. but it does not work. i was using a test light, in lieu of hookin into the parking lights (for testing purposes, as i read that sometimes this type of addition does not work).  when 12 volts are applied to the X terminal of the 552 flasher, the L terminal lights the test light up faintly. i tried applying fused 12 volts directly to the X (by-passing the SPDT relay), and the same thing happened.

i guess i dont know how a Turn signal flasher works. when 12 volts are applied to a flasher's X terminal, should the L terminal have a flashing output? i have tried this with two 552's (both new), with the same result.

i would love any feedback. thanks so much. i just want the lights to flash. many thanks!

I think your problem is that you need a decent load on the flasher for it to work. Right now it is operation just like the one in your cars today when a light goes out the flasher stops.

Jeff, it is on a 97 Plymouth Breeze.

Chase, that is a very interesting idea. i had not thought of that. i will try to hook it up to the parking light circuit.

thanks to both of you for the replies.  im glad to know that it sounds like this should work (like i wasnt missing something big). :-)

hello. many thanks for the responses earlier.

Chase, you hit the nail on the head - when i hooked up the flasher to the parking light circuit, the flasher worked.

it only works when the alarm is set off (arming and disarming does not trigger the parking lights), which, i think, is likely something intrinsic with the alarm and the pulse or amount of juice it sends to the siren (i think i heard the SPDT relay or the TS flasher chatter upon arm and disarm, but no lights. i think it was the SPDT relay chattering - if the TS flasher chattered, the lights would probably flash). im guessing that the TS flasher needs to receive a smidge more time worth of power input than it gets from the SPDT when arming and disarming.....

but unless someone has a good idea about how to remedy that, i am happy.  many thanks again. :-)

Yeah, sounds like the relay needs more time on it to trigger it or maybe low power (less than 12vdc) from the alarm so the siren does not have full power (loudness) when arming??
