why does viper not recommend wiring the blue led that comes with the alarm with a red led. is there a difference in the two?

It could be the difference between outputs. Most alarms don't put out a full 12v to the LED's and if Viper does, it may blow the others.

Red led's run on a lower voltage than the blue 3.5 vs 4.5 . Also you won't have enuff current for both of them, as the output will be betwen 20 and 40ma.
