I have a co-worker who has a 1987 chevy with the VATS system, on occasion the vehicle will not start. After checking everything else I have narrowed it do to the VATS. Is there a way to disable this system? I do not want to purchase several hundred dollars worth of replacement parts until I can be sure that the problem is solved.

does that key have a chip on it? actually vissible?

measure the resistance of the key, then get a resistor that matches that value and install the resistor on one of the vats wires under the steering column.

look at this link for a alarm remote start, there is a section that tells you how to bypass VATS for remote start but using that info im sure could easy perminatly disable it.

permanently bypass? measure the resistance in the pellet, copy it with a combination of resistors to the correct value. find the two VATS wires and cut them free of the key side. take the two vehicle side wires and solder the resistor pack across them. now anything that will turn the key cyl. will start the car.

i dont think that will work if the vats unit is bad................

Depends on which part of the system is bad. For all we know the resistor in the key could be bad.
