I am trying to hook up an alarm in a 98 Malibu and I know that I need this item and about how much does it cost?

you dont need it if you are only hooking up an alarm... you do need it if you are hooking up a RS unit.....

This bypass unit usually runs around $30-40, and as Kgerry stated, you only need it if you're connecting a remote start to that vehicle.
