I want to install a Compustar 2wss-as alarm into my 2000 prelude. How do I determine that I have to use a relay to make a certain function work? What will happen if I don't use a relay where I'm suppose to? Will it damage something or just won't work until I connect in the relay?
Relays are used to trigger a device that requires more current than the CPU is capable of outputting. Relays are used in lots of different applications for alarm or remote start situations. If you tell us what you are trying to do with the Compstar we can tell you if it needs a relay or not.

I read the section on relays on this site, so I know the basics. But it still doesn't tell me how to check for or how to know for sure that this and this will nead a relay in order to do this and this for the function to work.
What I'm trying to do is intall the compustar alarm, which also has a remote start. I need to know basically all the connections (if I need a relay or not) I have to make for this thing to work. This is just what I could remember from the top of my head:
- 12v constant
- ignition
- accessory
- status output
- door triggers
- door lock
- door unlock
- hood pin switch
- trunk pin switch
- trunk trigger
- trunk release
- parking lights output
- tachometer input
- siren output
- horn output
- brake
- parking brake

Ok here is some advise that I think might be needed. One "Automotive Alarms are Not Toys" Two "When in Doubt sub it out" In other words you can really mess up your car if you don't know how to install an alarm. One with Remote Start I would not even try and installing one without knowing how to do a Basic alarm first. Now for your question.
Parking light Flash needs a relay if not already onboard, Door Locks need relay At least 2 some times more. Dome light Supervision needs a relay, Starter Kill needs a relay. and the list goes on and on. So without the training needed to install this alarm Sub it out to a Pro.

drivers door priority with 5wi locks :o , theres a couple relays. extra accy/ign wires, often parking lights depending on the brain. trunk pop, horn honk, rear defogger, neons, motorized doors, wipers, illuminated path (head lights), adding lock actuators, adding more sirens, motorized amp racks, ect....
basically, the brain sends out low current (-) triggers to activate relays to do heavier current jobs. such as whats listed above and then some. relays can be used to make/brake/isolate different circuits.
