OK everyone, i recently bought an AutoCommand remote starter. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to installing, and i'm trying to figure out EVERYTHING before i even attempt to start taking my truck apart. The one and only thing i'm hung up on is finding a grommet in the firewall to run the necessary wires through. I'd really really like to AVOID drilling, so if anyone knows where a grommet is located that i can use, PLEASE speak up!

i know on my friends 98 blazer...there was one located on the passenger side area. if my memory serves correctly..it's 'bout half way towards the middle of the vehicle. I might be wrong though, but it's in that general area. Even he didn't believe me and he works for best buy LOL.

Eer.. i checked and i can't find any grommets on that side of the truck.. there seems to be nothing but heater/AC components in that area. ------------- I didn't do it. *nodnod*

BTW, if there's any way i can run these wires through the fender and in through the door some way or something like that, *ANY* suggestions as to how i might get these three wires (tach, hood switch, power wire) ran would be greatly appreciated!

alot of times if you go inside the cab, under the driverside dash, pull the carpet or firewall padding away from the firewall and you will some times see a black plug you can push out. Otherwise you may just have to drill a hole. Drilling the hole isnt that bad just drill a good hole and put your own grommet in it so the wires to rub against the bare metal.

I agree with Javelin3o4, once you drill a couple hundred holes in firewalls you become immune. But seriously you do not want to run any wires through door jams or fenders. They are just fire hazards.

Find any rubber firewall gromet that has wires going through it and poke a small hole with a pick through it. Now tape the wire(s) that you want to the end of a long, but thin screwdriver and poke the wires through this hole.

usually on those trucks i pull apart the pass. side kick panel and make a 1/4" hole right about in the middle for alarns, remote starts, and amp installs. its pretty easy and most grommets will snap in there. plus if you are running amp wires its a straight shot to the battery.

I go thru the hood release grommet on that vehicle for tach. From the inside, remove the padding near where the steering assembly is on the firewall. You can fit tach and hood pin thru there, but power wire for an amp probably isn't going to happen. Absolutely do NOT run your tach wire thru the door jam. Any idea what happens if a tach wire grounds out? You don't want to know. Its tricky to find a good place to drill on that vehicle.

Thanks for all the advice, i'm going to check tonight behind the carpet and stuff. I have another question. My emergency brake release is in the paneling under the steering wheel. I took the screws out of the panel the other day just to take a look and i could only move the panel a few inches in any direction, but there is enough space for me to work with and be mildly annoyed. Am i going to have to try to deal with it or does that release come out of that panel some kind of way? Again any advice is GREATLY appreciated!

if its the one im thinking of, you have to reach back on the left (follow the cable) and pull the gear the cable pulls on forward some to take off tension... then just slip the cable up and out of the holder it pulls on. then you can pull the whole bottom piece forward and out. basically the cable detaches from the mechanism it pulls on, you just have to pull it forward a little to give it slack, then lift the cable out. ------------- MECP certified installer

ok, now a quick airbag question :) all airbag connections and wires are yellow, right? i think i heard that somewhere.... is it safe to take the bottom off of the steering column? (the part that extends out to the ignition and steering wheel, just to be sure you know exactly what i'm talking about lol) there's nothing in there that i'll mess up by remove the bottom, right? it looks like it should come off after i remove two of those star shaped screws. ------------- I didn't do it. *nodnod*

duh, i forgot. I meant to mention in my last post that the reason i'm asking about airbag stuff is because i see where my starter wire is also yellow. The only yellow wire i see that comes out of the steering column goes to a yellow connection and where the yellow coating ends a white and a green wire come out. :-D so i'm figuring this has got to be airbag stuff.. also where are the passlock wires going to be? is the only place i'm going to be able to mess with those right at the ignition switch or is there someplace else i can tie into them?

most of the time the airbag stuff will be wrapped in yellow tape or loom, and have a yellow plug, i know of somecars like 99 neons they dont identify the SRS wires and just run them in the same loom as the ignition wires. If you need to disconnect it i belive you have to pull the SRS fuse, wait 30 sec, then you can unplug it. just wait a few sec or mins after you pull the fuse because SRS Systems still hold enough power to blow the airbag usually upto 30sec after power has been lost to the SRS system.

Ok, i'm into installing now and i'm looking for a brake wire. There are four wires coming out of the white switch that's attached to the brake pedal, but none are white like the instructions say. there is a fuse for the brake lights under the hood, would that be a good place to hook the lights up to the remote starter? if so how would i go about finding that wire in the fuse block.. ? lol ------------- I didn't do it. *nodnod*

grab a meter and look for the only wire that has 12 V on it when the brake pedal is depressed...this is your brake wire
