I just ordered a Valet 554R and soon after downloaded the Install Guide and tht Useres Guide. In the Install guide they make several references to a 998T Bitwriter or a Directed monitor for programming the system. Could I use any monitor for this (hardwire it myself)? The maual is a little vague on programming the system with out the use of these. Should I expect to run into problems withouyt these tools?
They mention the possibility of the system being in "lock-out" mode if it was previously hooked up to a Bitwriter and the needs to be "unlocked" with a Bitwriter. Should I expect my brand new system to be in "lock-out" mode? If so, is there a way to unlock it without a Bitwriter? Basically I don't want to pay an extra $100 for a tool I'll only use ONCE!

Should not be an issue programming without the bitwriter. You should be able to use the valet switch for programming features on the system. Gary

Not needed for basic programming. And it will not be locked out of the box.

Thank you Gary, I just think I got a bit intimidated by all of the steps needed to do it this way. When I recieve the system, and install it, I'll give this a try.
Also...I do have a laptop p.c., where could I find an interface cable and how much do they go for? Just in case.

YOU WONT NEED A BITWRITER ( ALTHOUGH IT SURE MAKES PROGRAMMING EASIER ) and it is not a PC based system like Cliffnet so unfortunately there is no interface cable that will do what you are suggesting.....

Okay, now I know what all of my options are for programming this thing. Thank you Kevin. I'm sure I'll have more install questions when it comes time to hook this thing up so I might be shouting out to you all later. Thank you for your patience! ------------- Kev.

FYI there are a couple of programming options that require the Bitwriter... with the Valet switch you can set your run time for 12, 24 or 60 minutes.... with a Bitwriter you can program it anywhere from 1-60 minutes in 1 minute intervals... for example... you may want to look over the programming differences, install it yourself and then have a DEI install dealer program it for you with a Bitwriter..... just a thought

I like being able to make the siren go off longer, 3 minutes instead of 30 seconds.

I had thought of that but it seemed that like the few places that Deal in DEI stuff were a$$holes. I'm not to keen on my car running for 12 minutes by itself. If I let it run that long...I've probably forgotten about it. I would be more comfortable with 5 minutes instead. Besides, if there happened to be some sort of malfunction with the radiator fan I wouldn't want it to overheat or anything. ------------- Kev.

I don't know about that. To me 30 seconds seems like a long time. Especially if it were somebody elses car alarm...going off...outside my window...while I was trying to sleep or something. ------------- Kev.
