Is this making any sense? The NY news today says that they are trying to pass a bill that bans car alarms, stating that they are a nuisance. This would be nothing but a greener light to car thieves, I would think. Instead of finding ways to curb car theft, they're thinking of banning car alarms? I think it's crazy. How else or what other (legal) measures can be taken to safeguard a car that is parked on the streets?

BS. It will never happen. Nothing to worry about...those 80 year old grandma activists can't even boil a soup anymore, don't think they can convince us to stop using alarms.

That is almost as insane and idiotic idea as banning car stereos, due to the rising number of morons who crash their cars with their head stuck to the faceplate of the HU!  I agree-It'll never happen.  But if it does, they had better bring back public hangings and stonigs, cause the justice system is going to be overrun with people who shoot the bastards stealing their cars.

Never say it won't happen.  Toronto was bylaws to ticket cars for false alarms.  Vancouver in the process of passing a bylaw banning alarms.  Pay attension to your local polititions, they like to please people who make a fuss and vote, and usually lack common sense.  If installers would set the alarms up propperly (so they don't go off when a piegon farts) and keep the owners from dialling up sensativity, alarms would be more effective.  By the way, Burlington passed a bylaw limiting cars idelling to no more than 3 minutes.  No, stuff like this will never happen, then we wake up and find out its to late.

yea this is ridiculous...especially in NY cause thats a high crime area...lots of cars get broken into.  maybe if the legal system wasnt such a joke then car thievs wouldnt do it as often as they do.  banning car alarms would not be a good idea becuase then people would just whoop peoples a** for breakin into their car and thats just gonna rise violence and injuries.  I agree with Ispker that alot of installers set alarms way too sensitive cause customers think its "cool" that their car alarm goes off if you walk past it and fart, that is part of the problem.  really i dont think a shock sensor is even necessary as long as you have door pins and hatch/trunk/hood pins installed properly then there is no way a theif can get into your vehicle without setting the alarm off.  as far as any other way to safeguard your vehicle, maybe a high amp toggle switch hidden really good that cuts off the starter wire so they have a more difficult time hot wiring your vehicle??  or a smith and wesson security system!! haha  keep us informed if this joke of a law actually passes

Yeah, if they ban car alarms, people will start installing "fire kits" under their cars, to burn thieves to hell...or little kittens who fart.

Some city limts are ready have no sirens allowd. You can have the alarm, but no siren or horn. Most are dur to that they go off with little touch, and it is anoying. I belive that why not to many people even look whne some one car alarm is going off. I can go to a parkign lot and here few goign off at once only to see that some one exahust set it off.
So its not car alarms they want to get rid of ite the siren.

they want to ban them, because they are a nuisance.... i dont really care if someone's car alarm is going off in a parking lot, but if my car alarm is going off i do care.  you can compare that to cellphones,  everyones cellphone rings in public places, but no one cares when they hear it ring, except if it was their phone. a hell of a lot more cellphones are ringing in public than car alarms, yet i havent heard any laws that you have to have the phones silent all the time, at least in my area.....

well thats just what comes to mind when i hear they want to ban em cause they are a nuisance.....

The only time my alarm has EVER triped is when some kid thought the glass on my quarter window looked beter on the street. Harleys Loud radio nothing.. if a radio at any volume can trip your alarm I feel it needs to be turned down... If my alarm ever triped I know 99.9 percent Ima gonna need my flashlight cell phone and other things...

If it gose off all the time... the one time you say Naaa it's a loud radio it's gonna be a loud radio and somebody getting in your car. my friend said it's a loud radio.. The thief probly scoped it out and knew that his radio would stop him from checking it now he is s.o.l.

New York City's Mayor Bloomberg vetoed the bill banning car alarms this past Tuesday, arguing that a "broad ban could lead to an increase in stolen cars and theft of property from cars".  posted_image

The mayor did vetoe the bill, but what is scary is that two people have put up the bill for a vote and there are many people who are for it. I mean we have so much real crime to solve and there are people who have such things in their minds. I say idle brains are indeed a devil's workshop. Car theft for one would go on the rise, besides vandalism and alarm installers losing their daily bread. What they should do to complement this law (if any crazy person should pass it) is hire a lot more police force that really nabs criminals. I hope the law never passes as I do not see any harm being done by an alarm going off. If anyone feels that they are annoyed with an alarm, why not ask those individuals to go to a secluded area and live peacefully there instead of living in the middle of a busy city and complain that it is too busy?
