i plan to plant in some extra light into my door panel. the light will go on as long as the door opened and it goes off when the door is shut.

i opened up the panel but i do know how to wire the light ...the car is ford escape 03

can somebody help me out wiring it exactly?

You can use the existing door trigger wire ( PURPLE / lt green wire at the GEM module ) and this is a (-) trigger wire. Wire it to a relay that will trigger the lights that you are wiring up.

where is the gem located at? how can i reach it?

The GEM (generic electronic module) is behind the center console on the floor. Pull off the black panel to the right of the gas pedal, there will be carpet covering it. The plugs face the driver side of the vehicle.
