Subject: What brand alarm to get?

I am trying to find an alarm for my 1999 Toyota Corolla. I guess I am greedy and try to get as many features as possible with an alarm at the cheapest price. I understand there might be quality issues with lower priced alarms,  especially when it relates to electrical components, car starting ect. it might turn into a nightmare if trying to save money.. BUT I have seen this alarm called PD -175 Phoenix Digital alarm that has many features for dirt cheap..

https://.../phdpd175.html

I have also read some stories about the install that are a little concerning..

https://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/4/9589.html

Does anyone have experience with these alarms?? SHould I avoid it??

Thanks

Kevin

I have only dealt with one of those alarms, and I hate it, the owner hates it, the remotes broke in about a week, the stupid ass oil sense instead of tach, only remote starts when e-brake is set(sure), etc.... I could go on but I am sure you get the clue. Do yourself a favor and spend the money to get a good quality alarm that has a good rep.

I kind of figured this response by also reading other peoples responses.. I think I will avoid this alarm..

I assume a DEI product??

Basically I want something that costs no more than $130.00 parts. Labor I can install myself no problem, but I do not know of which alarm system to go with..

For $130.00 I am probally going to have to drop either the paging, or remote start. Any known good systems out there with paging, no remote start near this price range??  Thanks for any more advice on this..

I forgot to mention, I would like paging, but I would also take a system for around  $130.00 that had remote start, no paging if a paging option would be over the $130.00 mark.. Thanks

Any black widow fans? I have a Scytek alarm that looks just like a Black Widow. Not really happy with Scytek but maybe Widow is better?

Scytek makes alarms for many companies including Black Widow.  What is it you don't like with your Scytek?  They are designed in Los Angeles by the former Clifford (pre-dei) head engineer & manufactured in China, then assembled & tested back in L.A.  Everbody seems to love DEI here, one reason is probably that they are a great company to sell(make money off of!)and their power of one Dealer program is very profitable, and they have a great tech support system, but to me they are what they always were... a cheap alarm system made & designed in Korea that is just packaged & marketed real well.  I just don't really believe that they are the best, not by far!!! But from a shop owners standpoint, they might be a wide decision to carry as their huge marketing program makes them easy to sell as customers come in asking for them.  To me, they are the reason that every succesful alarm company today(crimestopper, autopage, etc.)has to outsource in asia to stay afloat.  Think about it, there are no more Cliffords or even companies like VSE who to me were the pioneers to offered high end quality engineers american made security products.

I meant to say Taiwan as far as where DEI is made.

eh everybody just copies DEI stuff anyway.  i pulled a prestige remote start out of a 2002 bmw the other day and it had a 555U taped to it.  every now and then you find some 451m's.  usually hood locks are DEI.

i find that black widow it junk.  the two way remote sucked (not that the DEI ones are all high and holy, just not as sh*tty as BW), the remotes can be difficult to program, programming certainly is different.  all of the shock sensors need full sensitvity no matter where installed.  they dont offer any add on freatures like timer/temp or window automation.  channels are usually limted to aux and ch 4.

there other things too, but others will still have anti-DEI stuff to say, i just listed a few points :)

The problem is there is no correct answer to this question, it is up to the consumer to decide for themselves.

I have owned several Crime Stopper products purchased off Ebay and am happy with them, great factory support, only weak point is had a few remotes go bad but great product for the buck, only reson i didn't get another one is they don't offer manual trans option,

There are many alarms w/remote starts nowadays (other than Crime Stopper) that offer manual transmission.

Also I agree with the point that the cheapest item is never the best item. If there is one, let us know!
