Hello all,

I'm installing an Avital Avistart 6500 into my 1986 Merkur XR4Ti.  I've figured out everything except for one connection.  The remote-start system has 3 relays.  You hook one (or 2 depending on the car) up to the IGNITION circuit, and one to the HEATER/AC circuit.  I don't have a heater/ac circuit.  All my heater/ac functions happen with the IGNITION (key to ON) circuit.  The manual mentions "a wire that has +12V when the key is ACC or ON but not START."  That would seem to be the ACC circuit, but my heater/ac gets no power from that circuit.

Can I get some advice on how people have installed their remote-starts, particularily what they did with the "heater/ac" wire?

Thanks

Some information that I have on the Merkur says that there should be a YELLOW wire that should be attached to the HEATER/AC wire of the remote starter. Check this wire for circuit verification.

Have you tried without hooking up your HEATER/AC wire and remote started your vehicle ? I ask this because the IGN wire should have 12 + when the car has CRANKED and is RUNNING, so if the car has been remote started then you should have HEATER/AC controls on. Post your results and we'll see what else we can figure out for you.

Thanks for the info... here's more details:

The ignition switch has the following wires:  Red (+12V constant from battery), Black (+12V in ON/START), BLACK / YELLOW (+12V in START), Yellow (+12V ACC/ON), and ground wires.

From what I've read, the Heater/AC wire would hook up to the Yellow (ACC) wire like you said, but the only things powered off that wire are the radio and heated seats.  Everything else runs off the Black (ON/START) wire.

Can I connect 2 of the remote start outputs (IGN and Heater/AC) to the same black wire?

I haven't installed the thing yet.  I'm waiting to see about this wire before I start doing it.  It would seem to me that the current draw might get a little too high for the remote starter if everything runs off that one wire.

Thanks!

Try connecting just the IGN wire from the remote starter first ( leave the heater/AC wire alone for now ). Connect everything up according to the diagram that you have and then remote start the car and make sure you have the heat/AC on when you remote start the car. If the heater/AC starts up, then you don't have to hook up the HEATER/AC wire from the Avital to the Merkur.

Thanks, Jeff.

I'm 100% sure that the heater/AC WILL work with the remote start if the IGN wire is the only one connected.  My only concern was that the remote start wouldn't be able to handle the current draw on the IGN wire with everything running.

I've been looking over the wiring book for the car and it seems like it should be OK.  I might  hook up that Heater/AC wire to the yellow ACC wire anyway, so that the heated seats will work with the remote start.

Thanks again for your help.

Kevin
