hi, i found a 1.2 amp battery backup for an alarm on a website. my question is...how long will this keep an average alarm running....the DEI manufactured one is only 0.7 amp/hour and they state a few hours of life....

Yes that unit will supply only enough current for a few hours to back up the alarm CPU. It will not supply enough working current to keep the siren going for very long.

Upgrade the battery to a brick sized 7.5 AH. Or buy more than one, and place them in parrallel to increase the run time / current output.
