I have an 04 Dodge Ram, and had circuit city install a Code Alarm,  the 2nd from the top of the line with remote start, turbo timer and diesel compatible...  It worked great for a couple months, but now it is having problems I think b/c it is cold.  When remote start it, it starts up and runs for 5-10 seconds and then shuts off.  I am 99% sure the problem is the alarm is sensing a voltage to determine if the truck actually started.  The tech says once the car starts the altenator should bump up the voltage a little and the alarm can see that and that is how it knows the truck is on.  Well now that is it cold and the new trucks have about 1 million different heating elements to make them run better in the cold, I started it regular and sat in the truck watching the voltmeter.  It actually goes DOWN for about 1.5-1.75 minutes and then jumps up to 14V.  I can hear the heating relays turing on and off in the background and the lights/fan actaully fluctuate a little as those relays kick on and off.  Once the relays stop, the voltmeter jumps up to 14+ volts and it is all good.

So the question is, how do i get the alarm to recognize that the truck is running without relying on the voltage reading???

Bring it back to Circuit City and let them troubleshoot the alarm and their installation.  If you mess with it, it will void your warranty.

And tell them you would prefer it to use the tach sense mode instead of the voltage sense.  They were being lazy, and didn't want to run a tach wire out to the engine compartment, so they set it for voltage sense.  Sad part is it only saves them about 1-2 minutes on the install.  The tach is a much more reliable input than the voltage, even heater fans, and high amperage stereos can fool the voltage sensor in an alarm to think that it didn't start.  Good Luck.

If it don't fit, Force it.
If it breaks, You needed a new one anyway!

It does sound like a tach problem.  The best place to get the tach for disels is at the instroment cluster itself.  A lot more work, but better results.

p.s. This is why I charge for  an extra hour of labor for disels. Not hard to do, just a pain in the a$$.

Reliable tach on that truck is at the PCM on the drivers side engine low. Color is Dk.Blue/Grey

Yup, tachless doesen't work too well on the 04 Cummins. There are too many things pullin voltage as it heats up, and it drops far too often, causing voltage sense to not work. Tach can be had at the ECM on the driver's side of the block, waaayy down low... blue/grey as Shaughn mentioned. There is also a blue/red on connector #3 on the ECM, if I recall..... crank position sensor. It can be had at the front of the motor as well.

"When remote start it, it starts up and runs for 5-10 seconds and then shuts off."

Does it then attempt to restart or not? If not, it sounds like they have tach hooked up, but need to learn the tach signal at a higher RPM because the unit thinks the car is over revving and shutting off.

If it does attempt to start again, I would suspect the same as the other replies.

Sounds like the problem I'm having with the VW. I'm going to get a tach amplifier to solve my problem because the alternator sends the tach signal to the RS and the VW doesn't send a strong enough signal to the RS when idle, only after 1000 RPM. This might be a solution to your problem as well if the tach signal doesn't solve your problem.

It also sounds like a transponder problem have circuit city check to see if the transponder bypass is working properly . if it is  a DEi 556u being used make sure the transponder ring is positioned properly n didnt fall out of place.
