Subject: negative parking lights

I was installing an APS-786 the other day on a 04 ram1500. And as you know this truck has a negative parking lights trigger (or it requires a negative signal through a resistor).

Now I was thinking that since they have a feed wire for the pk lights that maybe you could connect that to a negative instead of a positive and not have to use a relay for the negative system. I didn't get to try it. So I was wondering if someone has one of these units and can check if that feed only goes to the pk lights relay and nothing else on the unit.

I used the negative wire on the switch. I was just wondering if there is a way to use the trigger wire from the alarm to deliver the negative without having to use a relay since it already has a relay built in.

But  I didn't have a chance to open the unit to check the traces on the board (alarm brain) to see if the pk lights feed just goes to the relay and it's not used by the alarm for something else. If that is the case the pk lights feed could be used with a negative without the need for an additional relay.

just take any one of the 2 white wires it doesn't matter wich one and ground it then take the remaining white wire put a 2000ohm resister on it  and connect to negative parking light wire don't go to positive because it will feed back into the bcm.

I've done many of these. Just go straight to the parking light itself and tap into it, and run the wire back to the alarm unit. Saves the headache of using resistors. Good luck.

 Actually it's a 249ohm resistor.

And I already did the intall. I just want to know for future reference.

Does the feed gets used for something else or is it exclusive for the pk lights?

PS. thanks for the replys

IF you dont cut the wire and install the relay in my dealings with it ,you will turn on the headlights also even with the right resistor. As far as using the positive wires you should use a relay to keep them separate since they are separate in the vechile. Have done many Ram trucks and that has been what Ive  seen.

It's not the vehicle I'm concern with. Is the alarm brain the APS-786 that I'm talking about.

bdl666, sorry I can't answer your question....I don't install that brand. On DEI products there is a jumper on the brain you can switch the position of and it switches the parking light output to negative. Maybe your Prestige/Audiovox piece has something like that.

As about 3 others have stated, there is a positive parking light wire in the truck. No relays or resistors required. WHITE/ grey in harness going to junction block near parking brake. It only turns on the outside parking lights, not the dash lights. If you use the negative with resistor you will get the interior and exterior parking lights.

I was reading the manual (go figure) and found that you can connect the pk lights feed to ground so you can use it on a negative system .

That means that the system can be used on a negative pk lights system without the need for an extra relay. The things you learn when you actually read the entire manual instead of just using it as a reference to check what this or that wire is for.  I have installed dozens of these units and have never bothered to read the whole thing, I just read the part that tells you what the wire is for and skip the rest( the part that tells you what the wire does).

Thanks to everyone for your help. Next time I'll read the whole thing intead of just what I need.
