I am going to add power locks and keyless entry  to my brothers 98 civic cx hatchback. The question is: can i use a regular door lock actuator to lock/ unlock the back hatch or do i need some special actuator?

You will need a solenoid, not an actuator. Trunk release solenoids can be purchased for about $ 20 - $ 30 for the 15 lb and between $ 25 - $ 35 for the 25 lb models.

This is a hatch, not a trunk. All i want to do is lock and unlock it, not pop it open. It has a handle (kinda like a door handle) to pop it open. Are you saying that the one-way pull of a solenoid will lock AND unlock this hatch?

Sorry, I thought you wanted to pop the hatch. I'm not sure if there's enough room in the back of those hatches to install an actuator. Have you taken the hatch plastic off to see if there's enough room to install one ?

No, the car is actually out of town right now, he is coming home around christmas and that's when i want to do the install, so i want to get the parts lined up soon. I have never worked on a civic so i thought i'd see if someone else has done this.
