Hi all,
Am fitting remote start (in conjunction with a very customised alarm) to a close friends VW Golf GTi.
After 1.5hrs trouble shooting (frustrating!!) we discovered the key has a transponder in it- won't allow the car to remote start after 30sec of removing key.
We have located the main computer (in front of windshield, near window wipers) and located the cabling from the key barrel into the computer.
Is there a bypass resistor I can fit to 'fool' the computer in to thinking the key is being used?
Or do I have to hide a key close by to permantly activate the transponder ?
I have read the earlier post regarding the Ford Explorer, Jeff, you wrote about winding some wire and relay-ing it. Is this the best solution in this case? If so can you please explain a bit more-either here or email me glynn.thomas@installerservices.co.nz
Once fully completed I can post some details of the system if you wish-let me know.
Cheers,
Glynn

mecp certification is not always needed. I have it and it has not helped me out at all. my experience out shines it.
Hey Glynn;
I have no information that says that the 1997 VW Golf has a transponder chip in the key ? Only the 2000 + vehicles have this chip . What you can do to verify if there is in fact a transponder chip in the key is to get a plain key cut ( it's only a couple of bucks ) and try to start the car with the plain key. If it starts it and it stays started then you know it's something else. If the doesn't start at all then it's got the transponder chip. ** Don't be fooled that if it starts and runs and shuts down again, this could be tach programming issues **
Here is a diagram for the bypass of the that can also be used with the VW Golf as well as Fords, Chrysler's , Nissan, Infinity and other imports.

Thanks guys,
Djfearny2, as it says in the title, 1997.
Jeff, yea, I didn't think it had one either. Normal frustrating stuff- thought we'd something wrong, pulled everything out (demounted everything). Checked all wiring, checked for voltage drop, tach settings etc etc. Rewired it as if it was a tachless model- still wouldn't start and run. Even tried hot wiring the car.
The frustrating thing was that if we started it with the key then remote started it straight after it ran fine. When we stopped it (say via brake pedal) then went to restart it, it wouldn't fire. 1 and half hrs of torment later, we held the key upto the key barrel and it started fine. Pulled the key away 6 inches and it wouldn't start.
Pulled the key apart, and whola ! It has the small skinny barrel like thing (same shape as our aftermarket transponder we are also fitting)-the 'chip'.
You can imagine how frustrating it was, and then how relieved we were to find it wasn't something we had inadvertantly done.
Now to get round it, securely. I'll check out the link you posted Jeff and let you know.
Plus, in New Zealand, we import used cars from Japan-its the main market of used cars here.It has really lowered the price of used cars. We are finding a lot of Japanese imported vehicles have features which are years earlier than what was or is sold here new. IE, this 97 GTi Golf, has features that of a 2000 model. Looks likea 97, but with some year 2000 features. Not always the case, but does happen-as seems to in this case.
Thanks,
Glynn

seeing that you have the pellet out, it will be an easy installation. This has worked with plenty of our installations and it is a safe & secure way to bypass the system as it only activates when the remote starter's fround out when running wire is engaged. Otherwise the relay stays dorment until the trigger wire is engaged. let me know how you make out with this and good luck.

this is a common prob in the uk on 95 onwards vehicles, they all have transponder chips in the keys over here.
