NEED HORN RELAY?

Hello all,

Got it all wired up and am ready to test it out, but one problem.  As soon as I touch the horn input of the alarm to the horn output on the truck it starts honking (constant, not pulse).

Using Aladdin A-2000, 2001 Ranger, (-) on honk. Tested the wires and they seem to be right.  Do I need to be wiring in a relay?

• You have to change the programming to pulse the siren/horn output.
• Also, test to see if the BROWN wire has a ground on the wire when system is NOT ARMED. If the wire tests ground then this is a bad CPU. 've heard this problem before in the past with the CPU and it's covered under warranty. Just send in the brain to the manufacturer or to the shop you got it from and they should take care of the rest for you.

believe it or not Jeff it 'sort of' worked itself out.  It didn't like powering up with the door open.  As soon as I closed the door and powered up it was just fine.

That sounds good to me  Also, do you know about the extended range trick on these Aladdin a-2000's ??? You can get more range out of the unit if you cut the resistor out in the module.

The starter / alarm seem to be working great. However, I'm having issues with the door triggers. I'm still testing, but here's where I'm at.

DRIVER DOOR or PASSENGER DOOR OPEN or CLOSE (basically any time):

If it's been setting for a while, I can arm it just fine (start it, stop it, etc). But, if I arm it / disarm it right away and then try to arm it again (like you do when testing) it tells me there's a door open.  Doesn't matter if they're open or closed, and it's not either particular door.  Does this sound like an issue with the GEM falling asleep? I'm going to keep testing but if you can think of anything off the top of your head let me know.

Did you end up diode isolating the door trigger to bypass the GEM in the Ranger ? If you did not then you will have issues like you have listed in the above post. Gotta love Fords and GM's with those RAP & GEM modules

Fundamentals my dear Watson!!  Let's see here, Ford uses a (-) indication on it's door trigger, which means the diodes have to be installed with the cathode on the other side!  Switched them around and WHALA!  We can now sense door position!

I'm testing now to be sure the GEM wakes up like it's supposed to so we'll see.

I also opened up the Communication Module - tell me again what I'm cutting? I believe it's the resistor I'm after. Dark yellow with a black stripe, correct?

it's the only resistor on the board. Cut this away and WHALA  !!! Better range for you and the car . Sorry I didn't get back to you on the above post, but I did'nt see it

So much for that idea.  Had everything installed, tested, soldered, etc.  I was putting the dash back together and testing after every step.  On the last step I locked the doors, remote started and everything was find. When I shut it off there was a constant beep coming from somewhere ( I was still in the truck ) and my door chime was going off ( no lights on, no door open ).  As soon as I started it again (this time with the key ) it quit.

So, I took my head unit assemply back out so I could see the brain.  I started it one more time, and instantly the brain started smoking.  So I tried to shut the truck off, but even with the key out the damn thing kept running.  So while my cousin was disconnecting the battery (good thing I quick connected before I started this) I just started pulling harnesses.  Finally the damn truck shut off and the brain quit smoking.

After we both quit laughing I checked EVERYWHERE for bare or burnt wires and found nothing.  The smell is definately electrical, and not that of burnt insulation. Now that the brains out I can definately say something on the board fried.  Can't believe after 2 days of installing / testing it waited for the final step, but I guess better it happen in the garage than going down the road.

So, the long and the short is that I'm off to Best Buy this week to buy whatever they have and have them install the damn thing. A $200 unit just isn't worth the gamble on a $20k truck!

Thanks SSSSSOooooo much for all the help though ( especially Jeff ).  I think it's fanastic there's a group of guys / gals such as yourselves that are willing to help out those of us just trying to save a buck.

Hey 2001edge ;

You can probably still get warranty for the Aladdin system ( CPU ) . I've had one guy that we sent the unit to and he did the exact same thing and he sent in to the manufacturer and they told him it was an installer error after looking at it. They just shipped him a new CPU and it take about a week to 2 weeks turn around time for this to happen. Let me know if you want to do this and I'll set you up with the proper paper work and contact person for the warranty.
