Subject: Remote start advice - which is best?

I am looking to purchase and install a remote starter with 2 way paging alarm.  I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado (with factory alarm, keyless entry) and have been researching the Viper 791xv, Galaxy 5000 RSW, and the Ultrastart 4560.  This is all new to me, and I would appreciate any comments on the above brands or any info about other brands to help make this decision!  I am also aware that I will have to purchase additional equipment (bypass module, and some relays?)  Any info will be greatly appreciated!!  THANKS.

I would recommend the Compustar lines as extreme1 did above. I personally like compustar's 2wss-as model. It is a remote starter + a security alarm feature. One of the most important elements of a remote system is the range of the remote. Compustar offers a 2 way system. The remote can send a signal to the car, and the car can send a signal back to the remote (2-way). First, its nice to be able to have a notification if something/one sets off your alarm. Also, its nice to be able to see if your car actually started when you hit the RS button.

Now to the range. While Compustar offers different models that compare with other manufacturers, I have not found another brand that can claim 1.25 miles of range and actually deliver like Compustar's 2wss series. Ultra Start comes really close. I have a friend who has a RS and door lock/unlock model from Ultra Start. It works great, but the range doesn't quite meet up to my Compustar. So bottom line, when it comes to range and a ton of great features, I think that Compustar delivers.

You can check out their website at www.compustar.org.

Any more questions or help with finding a unit, please private message me.

I would recommend Viper 791XV , this properrly installed it is a Security System , not just an alarm with remote start + the range will overtake any other system.

Isn't the range on that Viper only 1/4 of a mile, if you're lucky?

I tell you for the money/features of a system. The Commando FM-870 is hard to beat. I have used them exclusivly as my line of units and have never had trouble out of the units. They install easily, program easily and are good reliable units. They have plenty of outputs for window roll up/down modules ect... Give them a try sometime you will be well suprised.

The Compustar 900 or the 8000 are both great systems.

It's just because a buddy of mine and I, myself, have that alarm, lol. The range isn't all that. I've heard of other brand alarms (don't know the brand name though) that do reach distances of over a mile. On those alarms they use SMS signals like the SMS technology used on PCS companies. And SMS do well on penetrating through bridges and other certain obstacles. At least, from what I've come across to read.
