Chevy s-10 add on

I've read as much as the intro material as possible, but am still a bit bewildered.

I would like to add at least a magnetic switch to the rear sliding window of my truck, and possibly something for glass breakage/shock. I have the factory alarm on a 2002 ZR-2 extended cab.

To do this, could I just piggyback off of the door switches? If so is it as simple as using diodes on the lead (or do I have it backwards)?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Personally, myself being a certified installer, I have never heard of adding options onto a factory alarm. Factory alarms are as useless. Im not trying to sell you but a little advice is ,if you want a good alarm to protect your vehicle an aftermaket alarm is the way to go.

Well, I would like to just simply add a few sensors, if possible. I'm not sure what I would really be paying for if I buy an aftermarket alarm? I mean, if the car already has a key fob to activate the alarm, a siren (warning system), and a control box (brain) the only added protection I would get from an aftermarket system would be additional sensors, correct?

Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, but I'm not worried about the vehicle getting stolen, but I'm sick of people sliding open the rear window and extracting stereos. It seems to me that if I piggybacked a magentic sensor onto the stock system to cover the rear window, and then added either a motion sensitive system to warn of someone moving within the car or a glass breakage sensor I would have all the basis covered for what I need.

Are my expectations off? Is my view of alarms too simplistic??

It sounds easy but I dont think the factory system can hold options. Even diode isolating it from the other components. As for the factory alarm, it will only sound if the door is opened. If someone breaks the window it will not go off. All they would have to do is break a window and unlock the door. By doing that the alarm will never sound. Even by adding your aditional options to the factory alarm (if possible) the "theif" would just have to unlock a door to disarm the alarm. This could take a whole 2 seconds and all it would sound like is someone beeping the horn. With the aftermarket alarm you could add on as may options as you would like i.e. glass break sensors, remote start, shock sensors, pin switches, magnetic switches, proxsimity sensorsand up to 1000+ft range and an led to "prewarn the theif" just as an example. When any of these zones are triggered the alarm sounds and there is no way to turn it off unless it gets disarmed by the remote. Here is a better way to think about it. It sounds like you may have had a problem with people stealing your radio. If it stops them once it has already paid for itself. And now the theif knows about the alarm and 99.9% chance he will not make another attempt.

But if you still want to add these components to your exisiting alarm, go for it! If it will work or not I cant be the one to tell you but its worth a shot.

The one thing I figure, if these sensors don't work well, I can always use them on an aftermeket alarm, should I choose to upgrade.

I'm thinking (right or wrong, I'll find out) that I could just add diodes to the negatice trigger's of both door swtiches, add diodes to both the negative switches of the magnetic and shock sensors and then just wire them kinda piggybacked. Does this sound about right?? Any ideas on which sensors to use?

does it matter the brand of motion sensor.......also for a dual stage sensor, is there a way to way the first stage into the "honk" you hear when arming the system??

I would go with DEI as a brand. The purpose of a duel stage shock sensor is that upon impact if it is not stong enough to set off stage two, stage one will still give a warning, usally 4-5 beebs.

PS Anybody have recomendations on where to purchase sensors?

Depending on the shock sensor, There are 3 primary wires +12V, -, and trigger

yeah, replace it with an aftermarket one
theives know where factory alarms are and how to get around them. Youll never have the same level of protection and they are way too easy to bypass if you know what your doing. Also code hopping wont happen and theives can just use a code grabber on them. Plus,stock alarms only have a limited number of codes, so again they are easy to bypass!

what would I connect the first stage wire to, and the second satage?
