I was curious.   I picked up my freinds new truck for him (2003 HD diesel chev) and.. it has some theft deterant system installed.

To start the truck you turn the key, watch the coil indicator go off, then press the brake, then turn the right indicator on and only then do you turn the key to start it?  otherwise it won't turn over?

is this a home made job? or is this something you can buy?

sounds to me like the starter wire has been cut, connected to a relay at terminals 87 and 30, and the relay is energized by the brake signal and the turn indicator signal. pretty nifty idea actually. possibly more than 1 relay used. likely to be done by someone who's a fairly experienced installer.

It's a variation on the last diagram here. Instead of having one remote turn on, there's two latching relays w/ two turn ons (probably a total of 6 relays).

Do the brake lights and right turn signal flash when you do all this? If so, then only 3 relays necessary...

It is nothing more then a passive starter kill system. As far as being "homemade", these can be made from just relays, but they are available commercialy.
