Does anyone know of a safety switch or similar device to disable remote starting if trans is left in gear?

Better to use a car starter design for this kind of application. A logical sequence protect the ingear start and avoid you the pain to install switches on shifter.

If you see an advice on car starter telling you that you should not install into convertible car , you may prevent the reach of the shifter with a microwawe alarm sensor but it's your own risk !!!
