I recently purchased a 2002 grand am used which came with remote start. The unit is a DEI valet (551 i think). Recently the range has varied anywhere from 15 feet, to 3 inches from the antenna. I have replaced the remote's battery twice to no avail. A few weeks ago i was able to start the car from the second floor of my house, now I have go outside for the remote to work. All the connections on the remote start box in the car appear fine and i have unplugged and replugged all connections in.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this?

Kind of an oddball but, I have seen solder joints go bad on the reciever section of the board (primarily where the ant meets the board). It is worth a shot if you have a solderin iron.

I really dont see what golf has to do with this situation, but Augusta is amazing. If I was you I would simply go to a dei dealer and order a new antenna because that is most likely your culprit, infact I had the exact same thing happen with a customer today. Two weeks ago he got great range but today I literally had to have the remote 6 inches from the antenna to get it to work
