I want to replace the battery on our 99 GMC Sierra truck which has a sidewinder 5000 alarm however when I disconnect a terminal the siren goes off (even when I put it in valet mode). I guess the alarm system must have a 520T backup battery installed somewhere.  Where are they normally mounted and how do I disconnect it?  Do I put it in valet mode and then disconnect the 520T?  thanks

Do you ahve to return the battery, if not just let it go off, change out the battery. If you do have to excahge the battery see if can take off the ground to the siren or cut the wire so it wont go off. unless yuo wan tto go to the trouble of finding the alarm and the back up battery.

Well I also have to do some other auto repairs and need to have the battery disconnected.  I was thinking that there would be an established procedure to disable the backup battery. I don't mind having to take off a trim panel or whatever to get at the alarm.  I want to do this so that I am not diturbing the whole neighborhood.

Probably doesn't have a backup battery, but it probably has a backup battery siren. You will need the key that it came with.

Hmmm, I only received remotes when it was installed and no key.  I took off the drivers side 'knee bolster panel' and can see the sidewinder unit but cannot see a siren.  There is a bundle of wires running from it across to the passenger side and they disappear behind the heater (would have to disassemble passenger side dash panels) so I figure the siren is back in there.  You would think that there was an easier way for the owner to disable this system, after all there are a myriad of auto repairs in which you should disconnect the battery.  It's ridiculous to have to take your truck in to the alarm people every time you need to disconnect the battery.  I'll say this, it's a good alarm system, even the owner can't defeat it.
