Hi,
I successfully installed a BOA 165B remote start in a 1999 Chevy Malibu about a month ago. I was able to use it without problem for about 2 weeks....
After the first 2 weeks, the starter would crank, but engine would not start. At first, this was intermittent and I attributed it to the vehicle needing a tune-up. Now it is to the point that every time I use the starter this happens.

The troubleshooting guide recommends activating the system with the ignition in the “run” position. When I do this, the remote start operates correctly. The guide recommends re-testing the ignition system because either the wrong ignition wire is being energized, the system’s ignition and accessory wires have been connected backwards or the vehicle has two ignition circuits.

The vehicle does have 2 ignition circuits (which I connected according to the wiring diagram from the BOA website). IGN1, IGN2, ACC1 and 12V inputs all test correctly, according to the installation guide. The bypass module seems to work correctly and all fuses are in tact.

I re-programmed the remote and still no luck.

Is there something else I could be doing or is this just a crummy unit?
By the way – the temperatures here have been <10 degrees (F) for the last 5 days.
Could this have something to do with it?
At this point, it is the only variable that I can identify.

Any help would be appreciated!

Troubleshooting recommends that you look at your immobilizer bypass.

Thank you,
Since the car never actually starts (it just turns over), I did not think that the immobilizer was the cause.

The car starts normally with the key, so I imagine that means that the ignition side and bypass side (yellow and yellow/black) connections are OK.

When I disconnect the bypass and start with the key. The car starts and immediately dies (which is expected).

The bypass fuse is ok.

I guess next, I need to check the constant 12V to the bypass and 200mA status output from the starter.

Any other suggestions?

Actually what you describe sounds exactly like there is something wrong with the bypass. Check power, ground (MUST BE A PERFECT GROUND,#1 problem), and the connections on the data wire. Where is the ground for the bypass?

It took a while, I just connected ground for the remote start and bypas module directly to negative battery post.

Also connected the tach (BOA install guide cites this as optional).

Checked all concetions (again) still no luck.
Car turns over and never starts...

are you using voltage sense or did you do it right by running a tach wire?

Using tach wire (PURPLE / white) off of coil pack.
