hi, i'm tryin to diagnose the problem with our 99 gm suburaban & and astrostart premium 2006 remote starter installed a few years ago by a store.

when remote start is attempted, dash lites come on for a second, then the horn honks once, and no further start/crank attempts are made by remote starter.   vehicle works fine with the key.  dash & go mode (idle mode) doesn't work either, & when dash & go is initiated via the remote, i hear a click, park lites don't come on, & vehicle doesn't keep running when key taken out of ign.  i've replaced the brains with brand new one & programmed using 2100 install manual & still the same problem.  it has a astrostart passlock bypass module installed that has 3 connectors with 9 dip switches.  the other thing is i've check the wiring with a test lite & all seems ok, and the led blinks 5 times, & the hood sw is ok to me!

any help to this problem is appreciated 'cause i've installed various remote starters & this one just doesn't add up.

tnx, mark

If the dash and go doesn't work, chances are there has been a wire that has been disconnected or broken. Another thing to test for is 12 volts on the brake line.

Hey Velcro,

If you get 5 flashes it usually means the hood input is seeing ground.

I know you said the hood input switch is ok but check for ground at the plug going into the module to make sure. It could have been passed through the firewall without a grommet and after a few years of vibration the wire is shorting to the body somewhere. Or it is getting pinched somewhere in the engine compartment and shorting to ground.

After eliminating that try the next steps:

Are your Ignition, starter, accessory wires wired to individual relays or does the 2006 have built in relays inside the module?

Check the individual relay or output from the brain that powers your Ignition circuit. If the pit stop mode doesn't work then it sounds like the ignition isn't being powered during the start attempt.

Also, you could try putting the key in and turning it to on (not start) and then activate the remote starter. If the engine cranks over then you know the starter relay is ok.

If you've replaced the brain then there has to be a bad wire somewhere along the way.

Also go to page 29 on this link and go through the troubleshooting steps.

The most likely problem is the hood pin.....does the unit have the "old style" magnetic hood pin?

I believe thats what the 2006 used.   Also . The master on/off switch....? Is it on, Iknow thats a silly question  but !

If the hood pin is in doubt and its the old maget type....replace it with a "normal one" and reprogram as normally open.  If it appears that the switch is OK, put your multimeter on the hood pin wire at the brain. Open and close the hood. Should see ground when opened, and nothing when closed

hi, i've checked the hood pin switch wire right at the brains with the hood open & closed, it's ok.     i disconnected all 3 plugs from the passlock module & the vehicle will still crank with the key but it won't run - i expect this since still in security violation.     i checked the brake line at the brains & i only get 12v when brake pressed.     the starter/ign/heater wires are hooked directly from brains to vehicle wiring.     i'll try key just on then remote start as sujested.     it has the magnetic hoodpin type, i'll replace it with the spring loaded pin type & try again.

thanks

Was your security light flashing when these failed remote start attempts occured?

If you tested the hood input with the hood open and closed and didn't get a ground when the hood was closed then you should't bother replacing the hood pin.

hi, when all 3 plugs from passlock module disconnected, the security light was on with the key.     the security light was not on during remote start attempts.     i checked the hood switch at the brains again & it is open when hood is down - ok.     i tried with key in 'on' position, & attempted a remote start, but no start was attempted by brains.     i kept magnetic hoodpin switch installed.

I put in old brains, & programmed up using 2100 guide, it now attempts remote start, cranks for approx 1/2 sec, then shuts off, & it tries 2 more times, it reports error code 12 (over 3000rpm).  i programmed tach manually, & still the same error code.

why the new brains won't work?  may be not exactly wired pin for pin or the programming tables are different.

any ideas, tnx.

That one sounds like a passlock issue.   Also make sure your unit is programmed for 8 cyl. from the tach wire at theBCM under the hood.  Do you know how to do the programming of the passlock module?

no, i don't know how to program the astrostart passlock module, i couldn't find the info on the net.     i did program brains for 8 cyl mode 800 rpm,  i checked the tach signal fed to hte brains with a command start tach probe i have & it's good.

hi, got some programming sheets for a couple of revs of the 2006 from a local dealer,  they are definately different from the 2100 series.     i also got the programming sheets for the passlock module.     i will try new programming on vehicle when i'm at work next.  i will try the new brains on the bench at home tonite.
