Hello everyone, I need alittle help and i do not know were else to turn. I am installing a 996a starter/alarm in a 1996 gmc jimmy with a 4.3L. I am up to the point where i need to hook up the tach wire. I search on here for answeres before i posted and from what i gather it should be a white wire on the ECM. I can not seem to find the wire coming off the coil. One side of the ECM is marked "black" and the other is "white". One the "white" side of the ECM i see a white wire in a plug. If i hook up a test light to this wire will the light glow brighter if the engine is reved? Sorry if this is a stupid question but i am trying to get this done after 2 days of headaches. Thank you

DO NOT USE A TEST LIGHT EVER!!!!  that is a quick way to fry the ECM.  use a multimeter to test for a tach wire.  the AC voltage will fluctuate as the engine is reved up.

white.... on the plug marked "white". It's the only white wire in there.

When testing with a multimeter,

Set it to AC Volts

Set it to the lowest possible setting.

Ground the black probe

Strip a small piece of insulation on the suspect wire.

With the engine running, touch the red probe to the bare copper wire.

The numbers will bounce around a little

but the number will increase with a higher RPM level.

Usally between 1 - 5 volts.

If this happens it is the correct wire.

Thank you for the help, the white wire did just what you said so i knew i had the right one. Just got done installing everything but it will not start. I pushed the key button 2 times and all i get is beeps from the remote and the control module sounds like a turn signal flasher.
Any idea what could be wrong. This is the last thig i need to figure out so i can put the car back together. Thanks again for the help.

You need to program the tach. To do so follw these steps.

1) Turn the key to the on/run position.

2)Press and release the program switch 3 times.

3)immidetaly turn the key to off.  (alarm will cherp)

4)immeditaly press and hold the program switch and start the car by using the key.

5) the unit will flash the led and/or parking lights when the tach is learned, then release the program switch, The tach has now been learned. You should be able to remote start it know.

Let me know how you make out.
