Subject: disabling clutch start in a 02 Jetta
Date Posted: March 15, 2005 at 5:17 PM

I'm going to be installing a Viper 791xv into my 02 Jetta tomorow, but I had a couple of quick questions first.

Does anyone know which wires it is to disable the clutch start? And would it be possible to in some way use the status output, in combination with a relay to just temporarily disable it? I've always just disabled it all together in my other cars, but I'd rather not if possible with this one. The reason is that I've heard a couple of mixed things with volkswagens that if you just jumper the clutch wires together, the cruise control won't work becuase it's tied into the clutch. (ie. when you're in cruise control, if you push in the clutch, it turns off cruise control so the engine doesn't rev, so now it would think the clutch is constantly depressed and not even engage at all)

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

yes you do use a relay and the status output like you said don't cut anything just use a relay.

Hey I just installed my Prestige APS 996 on my VW Jetta 98, I did not touch the clutch at all. All you have to do is find your starter near your engine and run the starter wire from your alarm to the starter (check the wire from the starter before connecting it). The auto start works and you do not mess with factory clutch system. If you have any questions email me.

Ummm.... you have the 668M manual transmission interface module..... right? Sure hare to see when your car runs over the neighbors kid because you "forgot" to leave it in neutral......

Gus, 688m isn't available in the US, they're testing it in Canada right now.

Silver, get a hold of any canadian Viper Dealer for a 688m manual transmission adaptor for viper remote starters.

Testing? Hell, we've been stocking and using them since they were available from DEI Canada. I thought they were available all over North America..... interesting. Little bit clunky as far as having to wire up another box, but, seems to work slick as hell so far..... I like 'em, and the price is definately right.

If you are going to put a relay on a clutch, then it is the same thing as going right to the starter. You will be bypassing the safty starter for manual anyway, so why play with 5 wires when you can connect one.

I dont understand why people have such a heart attack in the12volt that they hate hearing about manual with auto starts. I know many people who had it for a long time and nothing has happened to them. You just have to be careful and responsible.

The fact that you know people that have had them doesn't add up to the fact that I know people who have given homes and business's drive thrus with them. Responsible has nothing to do with it. The simple fact that there is a chance that it can happen is too much. If you would like come do the remote start on my 5 speed, then I will send it into a wall and then promptly sue you for not installing it correctly (preventing it from starting in gear, LIKE THE INSTALL MANUAL SAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). You can't and won't get around that fact in court.

I can't say that I think installing a RS on a manual tranny is a great idea, but at the same time I know that if I had a manual I would probably install one myself.  BUT I do know that if I did I would ensure that there are PLENTY of safeguards that do not allow it to start in gear.  The minute you don't use the safeguards is when the car takes off.  Just use all the modules you can to ensure that you can not start it in gear.  I know ALOT of people who said they would be responsible and ended up with damaged buildings and cars to match.  just be careful.

DEI makes a RM for a manual tranny. I wouldnt even do them even if they had a system for it . it is to much of a risk  to me   i would sed the car down the block and watch that guy deal with the problem if something happens.

Well, my last post about this subject only lasted 2 or 3 days.....lets see how long this one lasts.

All I do is RS and security........and I do them smart and safe. There are products in ALL lines that allow you to do so.

I have allways learned, do the job smart, safe, and correctly.....all of the posts prior to this one say that as well, but in

a Politically correct maner,  my last post, cut to the chase....non-PC Everyone saying "be carefull"   how about saying

"this is what can happen if your not"    I have seen it!! thats all. sorry
