Customer wants remote start on 2004 Audi A8L, makes $1000 standing offer for someone who can successfully do the job. This is not our area of expertise. Anyone out there with experience who has had success at these kinds of models? The key has "transponder" functions and the physical ignition is actual what is known as the "Access Recognition Module" which sends some sort of signal to the rest of the starting system.

Is the key a pure transponder type key, there is no actual key? If this is the case then pass.

There is a key - it is the remote/buttons/folding key type of thing what you use to open the doors, the trunk, etc. It has those inner-engraved tracks on it. It goes into the door if necessary (there is one place where a key can actually be used to open the doors) and it goes into the ignition module, which is the "Access Recognition Module" apparatus referred to above. The 2003 tech sheet for an A8 doesn't look so bad. Unfortunately, directechs doesn't have a listing for a 2004 A8L. For $1000, I'd give it a shot. Unless the car went all CAN-BUS in 2004, then I'd probably pass.

Unfortunately it is all CAN Where you insert the key is not a switch but the "Anti-theft Immobilizer Sensor". And it communicates to the access/start recognition control module Via CAN. Which in turn activates the vehicle's circuts via the vehicle electrical system control module...all on BUS. Same for Touareg, Phaeton, Jetta V, '05 A4, and soon to be all VW/Audi's. I have been tinkering with a Touareg R/S for the last couple weeksso far it is going very slowly. ------------- Jeff

I think it is all that CAN bus stuff. We sweet-talked a local mechanic (who was technically breaking Audi's rules) into giving us a look at the computer drawings. It said "CAN" in a lot of places. The actual signal from the key device ("Anti-theft Immobilizer Sensor" or whatever) showed a slightly different color and arrow design, and the text said "a discrete signal" was sent to the rest of the system.
