I hooked up my trunk release to my 520s car alarm and it would't open the trunk when i press the trunk button on my remote then i took a test light and put one end to12v and the other end on the gray wire and it would not light up i hooked up a 30 amp relay to it i installed the trunk release  myself i have a 2005 pt cruser

definitely use a relay for the trunk release.  Without it you will burn out the module.  Make sure any wire connections are soldered, and if you can use a multimeter.  Sometimes the unit can't produce enough to light a bulb.  It's only about 200 mA. Deffinitely try chacking it with a multimeter or voltmeter.
