im installing a set of power windows into my truck and am having the hardest time figureing out how to wirethem . .. i opted out of the $45 switch kit (yeah i was wrong) and got myself a pair of '91 explorer switches. The problem is they have 5 wires and all combinations i have tried end up in a short (tried on external batt for testing). I have the wiring diagram but can make heads or tails. i know two wires come in, one lockout, and two to the motor. i just dont know how to revers the polarity of the incoming wires . ie what do i splice them into? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using relays at all ?

That is your problem. You still need relays to separate the power from the switch otherwise you burn out the switch or worse, the motor. You will need to wire up a set of relay in reverse polarity.

so there should be a hot lockout wire, teo wires going to relay out to the motor, then what are the other two wires to? im so confused. I can make it go down but not up.

Looks like a red x to me.  If you can get it to go down, reverse the polarity and it'll go back up.  You can use a 12v drill battery to demonstrate.  Connect straight to the two wires on the window motor and it'll move one way- switch it around, and it'll do the other.  If you do as Jeff suggested, you'll be set.
