Specifically the starter relay.

The reason I ask is that I installed a Viper 550 esp. I had it all hanging out of the dash and working, but when I tucked it up under the dash the remote start wouldn't engage. The dash lights up, but the starter doesn't engage.

I've went over all of the wires, cannot find a problem, it just wont start.

I went over the wires again, checked everything I can think of. I probed the purple (starter) wire that's in the 6 pin harness running to the relay from the control mod, then activated the remote start. There was no change in current. This really has me stumped, it worked perfect numerous times before I mounted it all up under the dash. I also checked my hoodpin/brake/tach wires, they look fine.

Octane

did you check your fuses on the relay pack also you can try switching around relay heads to see if the relay is bad also did you probe wires going to the starter to see if it is going to 12v when started

When I probe the starter wire during remote start I get no voltage. I tried swapping the relays but had the same results.

Your brain may be bad on the 550esp did you say that when you checked on the ribbon cable the purple wire should go to ground when starting if theat isn't happening the brain is bad.

I figured it out!! The purple wire on the ribbon had a short. I ran a new wire and it starts now.

Now I have a new problem, sigh, this install will be the death of me...lol

I have the alarm set to tach sense, with the tach wire connected to one of the wires comming out of my coil pack. But when I start the truck, it runs for about 10 seconds then the remote start shuts it down. I know I have it programmed to tach sense, and I'm fairly certain about the wire on my coil. What could be the problem? I did try voltage sense on high and low, but the result was the same. It seems it does it as the truck settles to idle after start.

Also, just to be sure, which wire should it be connected to on a 96 Ford Ranger?

Tach wire 1996 Ford Ranger. At the coil I have RED / Blue, Yellow/Black, Yellow/White, Yellow/Red.

My remote start cranks my truck, but after 10 seconds or so it dies. I tapped the yellow/white on my coil for tach sense. Any help?

Try setting it for Voltage sense to see if it still has that problem. If it does then double check all of your ignition wires to see if you have them all hooked up correctly. Also Check if there is a factory immobiliser which I dont think there is on that model.

I just tried voltage sense on both HIGH and LOW. I have the same results. It seems that when the truck finally settles to idle is when it shuts down, regardless of how quickly or how long it takes, as soon as it's idle it shuts down. It's not just around the 10 second range, sometimes it takes 5 seconds and sometimes longer than 10. I just pulled the looms and tape off of all of the wires to look for anything, but everything seems to be in order.

I'm thinking that maybe the tach wire is in the wrong place for tach sense, but everywhere I look says tan / YELLOW at coil which I do not have. I found one schematic that said yellow/white, and I have one of those, so that's where I put it. I had this same 550esp in my 94 Escort with no problems like this, right up to the day I took it out it worked perfect.

Any suggestions?

did you learn the tach? did you test for the tach wire with dmm

are relays all working send 12V to ign acc

check fuses on relay bank on alarm

I did learn the tach, I wanted to wait till it settled to idle to learn, but the 550 ESP only learns if you press within 5 seconds.

There's only 1 relay to the ign, it's all it ever had, think I need another relay? There's only 4 relays altogether, kill, starter, ign, acc. I'll double ck the relays tomorrow, but I would not think it would stay running 10 sec if the relay was bad. I did ck the 2 30a fuses, which I have running to seperate ign wires that provide 12v.

This alarm comes with 2 acc relays, do both need to be hooked to the same wire? If one's not connected could this cause the truck to shut down?

Oh, and also, if the 2nd relay needs to be connected, does it need to be tied into the same acc wire as the first, or does it belong somewhere else? Thanks for the help.  :)
