on the 5 wire door lock system, the diagram shows the lock and unlock wires cut to connect to the relay. one side is from the switch and the other is from the motor. just so I don't mix them up, is the wire from the switch the wire coming out of the lock button on the door and the wire from the motor is coming from under the dash? or vice-a-versa? thanks

Depending on where U cut the wires:
You would normally test your cut wires by pressing the driver switch ( Switch side ) & the other side is Motor side. 
Note:
Some vehicles require you to check from Passenger switch.  If you don't then the Relay will be wired backwards.
