Hi..I have a 96 grand Prix with a silly chip in the key that recently has stopped working so well and so my car now only occasionally starts. Usually it is stagnant for 3 minutes till it resets. Instead of replacing the ignition (which my dealer suggested after replacing the keys twice), could I use a remote car starter? I am wondering if that would supercede the key/contact issue with the passkey/vats system..any help would be great!!

You have a VATS system and you can permanently bypass the system with a relay but this will defeat the security of the VATS. A remote starter will work all the time until you put your defective key in the ignition to take over and then it will do the same as it is now.

jeff..would getting a remote starter with an alarm help if I permanently bypassed the VATS system? I have an alarm in addition to the crappy key thing..it almost never starts on the first try..its worse in cold weather..which is daily now in Boston...so maybe a starter and alarm? what would you or anyone else recommend??

What you can do is place a relay with the appropriate resitor values inline of the VATS wire and instead of using the Ignition 3 wire you can wire it in so that it will engage whenever the ignition is turned over. You will need to use a normal key after you bypass the system because you can not have the resistor in the key as well as the resistors in the relay both working at the same time.
Go to VATS BYPASS at this link : https://www.velocitymotorsport.com/install_notes/Chevy.htm and follow the instructions to bypass the system. Now instead of using the Ignition 3 wire ( at pin 86 ) you can ground this connection and it will activate the relay when the ignition is turned over.
