CANBus Bypasskits

Has anyone tried these out yet? I know bromar released a version that didn't utilize a real CAN driver and I've heard of vehicle's locking up solid because of it.

As for installing remote starters and alarms in most of these new vehicles (in 2008 all vehicles) this looks like the way to go.

And I am getting one to try out soon.... well, a DEI piece that is supposed to work on VAG products (VW,Audi, Porsche, etc.)...... guess we'll see how this will work.

Anything I have had to add to my car that runs on the CAN bus needs to be adapted (recoded) to the car. Interestingly enough, in the VW applications, they list several cars Pre-2002. There is no CAN bus in the pre 2002 cars as far as I know. They are still using their "K" line to do everything. Like I said, the DEI piece will probably hit my doorstep within a couple days, so I guess I shall see.

Gus, there is CAN in all the vehicles listed at the bottom here, including the VW's. CAN has been around since 1985 and has steadily grown since then so I'm confident the list is accurate. As I mentioned above, All vehicles sold in North America will require CAN by the year 2008.

What is the part number of DEI's CAN module? I fear that this may be a repackage of Bromar's piece, if so be careful. From what I understand Bromars' does not use a CAN driver that conforms to SAE protocols and if the unit locks up the vehicle will be dead-in-the-water so to speak.

I'll be playing it safe and will stick to pieces that conform to SAE protocols (since they invented CAN in the first place). You might save a few extra bucks with propriatary modules, but I definately want to avoid paying any towing fees and service charges to troubleshoot a dead-vehicle from the dealership if a cheaper unit locks-up or fails on me. A dedicated CAN driver like the one on the CAN SL won't do this.

I do not know if this is any use to you but I was sent a pre release unit from this company pulsar-europe@iol.ie its plug and play can bus adapter that outputs speed, ( thats all I am interested in ), and a number of other things as well, what struck me about the unit is its low price £58 .
Its a one unit that seems to do all vehicles.

The CAN SL is the one that does it all here in North America. It's got the tach signal output on it and that is also what I'm hoping will reduce my install time by 20 %. Trying to find and run a tach wire into the engine is a pain in the arse and if I don't have to do it, this will be very beneficial.
