Hi Intrepid, you can connect a horn or an additional siren with a relay. Connect the siren output from the alarm to #85 of an SPDT relay and connect #86 to 12V+ if the siren output is (-) or connect it to ground if the siren output is (+). Connect  #30 to 12V+ and connect #87 to the positive lead of the siren you are adding. If you're adding a horn and not a siren, you'll want to use a 12V flasher inline on the lead coming from the relay (#87) to the horn.

thanks 12 volt!

 one more question if i use the horn will it sound when i arm/disarm the alarm i have a viper 300+ and i think there is a feature to stop the horn from making noise during arm/disarm. is this still the way to hook the horn up to do this?

Hi Intrepid, you're welcome. If you're using the flasher and relay on the siren output of the alarm, the horn may or may not sound when you arm and disarm it depending on the duration of the arm and disarm chirps, but yes, this it the correct way to add it if you do not have a dedicated horn output from the alarm. If it does sound when you arm and disarm the alarm and you want to stop it, the easiest solution is to turn off the arm and disarm chirps on your alarm (feature 2) or change the siren output (feature 11) in programming.

Hi guys,

Can you explain why you have to use the flasher to add a horn to the siren output?  Is this because the horn would otherwise send out a continuous sound...and instead the flasher  will make it "honk honk honk" with the siren?

And just to double check your hookup in the previous posts, I should do the following:

  • #85 ---> siren output from alarm (+)
  • #86 ---> 12v+
  • #30 ---> 12v+
  • #87 ---> flasher ---> to the (+) lead of my horn
  • #87a--> tape off

Thanks!

yes it would sound contiuosly and that would damage the horn.

DO you have to take the alarm out of the constant siren output?....and switch it to pulsed?  If pulsed, then what would the siren sound like?

Also, I went to check out the 12v flashers at a car parts store...and they had ones with 2 terminals and ones with 3 terminals.  Which is the one I would need....2?

THANKS!!!!

No, you want the siren output to remain constant if you are using a flasher inline with the horn. You want the flasher with the two terminals. Your application is the same as shown below but instead of flashing lights, you'll be honking the horn.

Awesome, thanks 12volt!  There's no special kind of flasher, right?  They're just 2-terminal 12volt flashers?  I've never bought one before, so I didn't want to be stumped when I didposted_image

You're welcome, glad I could help. You can go to AutoZone or any other auto parts store and just ask for a two prong light flasher.

THANKS!  Can I just clarify that if I leave the lock/unlock chirps on, then the horn will also honk.  But if I turn them off, it will only honk when the alarm is fullly triggered?  What about the warnaway?

Thanks man!

You're welcome cpgoose. If you leave the arm/disarm chirps on, the horn may "chirp" occassionally without any consistancy. Most of the time it will probably not sound during arm and disarm.

The "warnaway" may also cause the horn to sound.  Once you get it hooked up, let us know how it turns out.

Cool beans, thanks for the help 12volt, I'll definitely let you know what happens:)

Oooh (I swear, posted_image last one)....what size fuse would you suggest for the 12v wire?

Locate the horn fuse and use the same size. It's probably a 10 or 15 amp fuse.

hey, check it out.  I fiiiiinally tried this out, and got it to work.  I hooked it up exactly as in the above diagram, and it didn't work.  AFter hitting my head on the dash over and over, I realized that I was sending the flasher (and the horn) a positive pulse (since 87 was connected to 12v+), and the horn needed a negative pulse to operate.  So, I connected 87 to a (-) connection, and it worked!  Sweeet!  I hope this is correct, and that I'm not hurting anything. I didn't use any inline fuses since I wasn't hooked up to 12v+ (well, excpet for the feed from the alarm wire).

Anywho.....the horn honks when the siren goes off.  Man is that loud!  Plus, it doesn't honk the horn with the arm/disarm chirps....which is exactly what I wanted it to do.  Awesome!

ok, i thought i was done.... I'm not sure if it's me or not...but I was setting off the alarm to see if the horn would honk, and it was fine. what i'm noticing is that it takes the alarm to respond to the remote now, though, but just in terms of shutting off the alarm. everything else (doors, rs, ...) work fine. Is there any reason that doing this horn install can make the alarm sound for a minimum amount of time or something?

Can anyone please tell me if I hooked this up correctly?  Yes, the horn honks with the alarm, but now the alarm doesn' t like to shut off when I test it.  I hold down PANIC, and it goes off.....then it takes like 15 seconds (or multiple, multiple pushes of the remote) to get the alarm to shut off.  Could installing this horn honk feature delay that at all?

Thanks!!!!!
