hi, i'm wanting to install aftermarket power windows that only work when the ignition is on. to do this i would need to use a relay i'm guessing. would a normal automotive relay be able to handle the current draw that the motors will need, oem electric windows use a 20a fuse per motor. thanks. Andy

normal??  Depends on Rating of Relay / s...
Some of the NEWer Power Window kits do not take a lot of current to operate

ELECTRIC LIFE makes a very good Power window Replacement Kit.....

What you can do is instead of using constant power for the constant power feed, just tap into the main ignition wire for your power. Most ignitions are rated for 30 - 40 amps of draw.

If you follow the instructions that come with Electric life, or Spal universal window kits. They will tell you to get power from Ign. controlled 12v NOT constant.

Most vehicle ignition circuits will provide a safe power source. Fuse close to the source.

thanks for the replies, so if i use the ignition as my power source would i still need to use a relay, the ones i was gonna use are rated at 30a by the way. The electric windows have been taken from a higher spec version of my car (Fiat Punto). so there isnt any instruction i'm just doig it my self. Thanks for the help

you DONT need relays, just connect the power source input to the IGNITION wire and you wont have a perminant current but a switched current

I disagree..............
It still depends on the TYPE Power Windows & if the Ignition Circuit you are using.
You would be safer with a Relay for Power from Constant & wire Relay from Ignition to have windows controlled by the Ignition......What's $ 1.49 as compared to Ignition overload and a broke down car??

It happens all the time......."Just hook it to the Ignition Switch"
AMPS, Windows, Alarms, Accessories, etc....paying NO regard of the primary function of the Main Ignition wire

so how would you recommend the wiring to be done mo12v? would you take a fused wire from the battery to the relay and have the ignition be the trigger for the relay? thanks
