I installed a Clifford Intelliguard 800 IQ in my wifes 1997 4Runner SR5 a couple of years ago and recently it began having problems with reception. Now when I say reception, I do not mean range, but the fact the alarm brain does not appear to receive the signal the first couple of times I hit the arm/disarm button.
The first thing I tried as a potential remedy to the situation was to change the remote battery.
Then, when that didn't help, I tried a different remote... no change.
Next, I pulled the electro loop antenna out of my civic and added it to the 4Runner in hopes it might help. The range did improve dramatically, but I still couldn't arm/disarm without trying 3 - 12 times (silent arm/disarm didn't make any difference). If I stand next to the car, or a bit down the street behind a dumpster, it doesn't make any difference... It's like the remote(s) are out of sync with the brain. (Anti-Codegrabbing issue?)...
Before anyone gives me the ole "That's what happens when you do it yourself and you should have had it done by a proffessional" lecture... stop right there...
I was an installer for just over 6 years, and ended up moving on to other things because I knew I couldn't make a living off of installing automotive stereo/security/multi-media stuff for ever. I can assure you it was not installer error. It doesnt take much to put an alarm into a toyota and it's not like it was an avantguard or anything. (I did my fair share of avantguard 3's... bringing back some bad flashbacks... no more Lincoln Navigators.... AHHHHH!!!)
Sorry... got distracted... Back to the issue.
I tried disconnecting all added features (dual zone prox, electro loop, impact sensor, hood pin, trunk pin, ignition kill, lights, door trigger, & locks). I had the alarm down to a bare minimum and still have the problem...
Can anyone give me some advice here... (aside from "go get yourself another alarm")
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Do you have the same alarm in your Civic? If so, I was going to suggest swapping brains to see if the problem goes away.
Nope...
I have an Intelliguard 700IQ in the civic...
I went a step further today and pulled the alarm out of the 4Runner. I hooked up just the red & red w/ white power wires and the black ground to a 12v power supply outside of the vehicle. I left the LED hooked up so that I could tell when it was armed or not. Still had the same problem.
I think this thing is toast... but I am still curious to know what the issue is and what may have caused it. Since I got nothing to lose, I think I will disect it and see what I can figure out.
