I am going to install a remote starter in a 99 Grand Am and I have a few questions. I have installed 5 other starters in 98 and older vehicles without the passlock system. I was wondering how to go about installing a starter on this type??? How do I test for resistance, and do I need a special module or anything?? Any info would be GREAT!! Thanks alot......

I try not to memorize vehicles completely but I believe that you dont need to test for anything. Just install a 555L or 555U and you should be set.

Someone pass me that bottle.
if you dont mind bypassing the passlock permanently all you have to do is locate 3 thin wires coming off of the key cylinder (white, yellow, blackor BLACK/ white), strip back the black or BLACK/ white then start the car, cut the yellow wire and strip back the key side of the cut yellow wire, now take your volt meter to measure the resistance, place the negative probe of your voltmeter on the black wire, and take the positive lead of your meter and place it on the key side of the cut yellow wire. you now have the resistance that you need. simply find the right value resistor and place it between the stripped black wire, and theecm side of the cut yellow wire. make sure you solder these connections. and also keep in mind doing it this way permanently bypasses the passlock. it saves you $20-30 and its one less module and wires to install. lock is a white wire in the drivers kick, lock requires a neg. pulse, unlock requires a neg pulse with a 1.5K resistor. tach is a PURPLE / white and can be found inside the car in the main harness going through the firewall. trunk release is BLACK/ white in drivers kick, parking lite is brown in pass. kick
hope this helps
One note on the permanent method of bypassing. If you chosse to do it this way, I would recommend using a resistor with a 1% tolerance instead of 5%. This way, if you either live in places, or travel to places where it gets really cold, or really hot, you shouldn't have problems with the value of the resistance changing to much. Otherwise you may have a problem starting your vehicle. I myself would recommend the DEI 555L or 555U parts so you don't have to worry about this problem. Sure it may cost so extra $$$ and maybe some time on installation, but it could save you a lot of problems down the road!!!
GOOD LUCK!!
