Hi guys, I'm a newbie at all this stuff so bear with me.  I have the oldest compustar two way starter alarm (the one with the black remote with buttons on the face) installed on a 2000 celica.  What I want to know is how hard it would be to replace this unit with the newest model (2W900FM-AS). I know the harnesses will likely not fit, and that I would have to cut all the wires and resolder everything.  I'm quite familiar with car audio installation but have never done security or starters.  Is this a bad idea?  To me it seems that it wouldn't get any easier as all the wires would be in one place already.  Any advice?

If you can properly identify all of the exsisting alrm wires...SURE you'll have an install book with the new one, go for it! test, test, test

OR you can just use the locations of where the wires were connected, test them then connect the new unit.

have fun, and good luck
