I'm planning an install on a 98 Camry. It has factory keyless and I was planning to use an add-on starter that works off 3 pulses from the factory lock signal. Upon looking through the past posts I came across this statement:

Chris Luongo wrote:

Yeah, what he said---the factory keyless on Toyotas doesn't work with the engine running; I'd imagine Lexus is the same.

So my assumtion now is that this setup would be a bad idea because after it starts, I have no way to turn it off remotely. This sound logical? I may just have to use a starter with integrated keyless but wanted some feedback.

Also, does the 98 have a  Transponder system? I looked on the key shaft but did not see a PK3 stamp. Is the stamp only for GM's?

Any other tips that you think I might find useful before I get into it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

yes get a starter with remotes also the pk3 is just for gm's you may have a transponder system just look at your key is the head real big and if so does your valet key have a plastic head as well or just metal??? if just metal thenno transponder.

Ok thanks securinu,

I've done a few dozen installs but have yet to do one that uses a transponder bypass. So this should be a new learning experience. Does anyone know if this vehicle will rearm the factory security upon relocking the doors with an aftermarket keyless unit or would it need to be rearmed with the original remote for the alarm to be active? Or is there another wire that I should tie into while locking? Lastly, do I need to tie into 2 wires to unlock all the doors or is there one that will control all at the same time?

Immobilizer By Pass : Some models have an immobilizer system that needs to be bypassed during remote start. Use DEI module 555F or 555U to bypass.

Thanks diabloed,

That's an impressive wiring diagram and great notes. LOL I've never seen so much helpful info on one. I appreciate it very much.
